Just wanted to share this with you all hope you dont mind. When we went to Dublin we stayed in a hotel that was to be frank pretty grim as it was undergoing renovations. I had booked it via Lastminute.com (using Quidco ofcourse) and it was one of their secret hotel deals so we did not know which one we would get until the order went through. However when we got back I complained to Lastminute using their online proceedure. I was not happy about the flodding in the coridors and the coldness of the rooms. I did not have the reference number but I filled it in as best I could just asking for some money back to compensate and suggesting they did not use this hotel as a secret one when there was no way of know of the extensive renovations.

Got a letter back today, lots of waffle about how they were sorry I had had a problem, how they had now changed the webpage from the hotel but really it was up the hotel as they were just an intermediary. Reading on however they have decide to give me £138 back as a goodwill gesture for being a long term customer. I can't believe it just goes to show it is worth complaining I thought I might get some money off my next booking never that I would get that much back.

    Very very happy.

  • Catshark,

Just checked the paperwork and it was the local district council we went through and it only cost £200. We got the old bit of our house done (new extension already done) so that was effectively a 3 bed detached property.

    Best wishes

I had an email today asking me to appear on Martins new program. It's to discuss getting car insurance for under £100. I had to email back and say that I wasn't able to as I wasn't able to get it under £100 in the end.
I have counted my £5000 stooze pot as a debt to be repaid and update it monthly.

Can you get a grant from some council or energy effeciency group fo insulation like that???
Thanks for this Catshark. I think I have exhausted the local grants for insulating the loft as we had this done a couple of years ago and it did help the top floor but having enquired at the time, the house is too old for cavity wall insulation unfortunately (1880, so it looks like this is the cheapest option. I am not relishing climbing down between the boards to install it though!

We have the same problem, when the wind stops I think it is actually warmer out of the house than in it!!
You don't live in my house do you?:D Yes we get this - but old buildings do need ventilation and I think we are much healthier for it - its just when its minus 11 outside, it does chilly the cockles a bit too much!!!:D

Interested to hear you had your house done tho' little Mama, as when I lived in my old 1930's house in London, my Local Authority wouldn't give cavity wall insulation grants to any houses built before 1950! Just shows how different criteria are applied across the UK.

  • Must've caught the Local District Council in generous mode as we've no exceptional circumstances and aren't on benefits.

We had cavity wall insulation done on our 30's house, but as we had an open fireplace they insisted on installing an air vent in the lounge too - we get such a draft from it, we feel colder in that room than it was before. However the house does feel warmer in other rooms. DO you have vents installed too?

Love this thread, still wishing I could have joined in back at the beginning, but hope to be in a better position in a couple of years to get back on the overpayment bandwagon.

Our gas fire is disconnected at the moment because we need to apparently have a 1m x 1m vent installed as its a large fireplace and these are the regulations now. I fail to see how we can do this without causing a horrendous draft!

We are thinking of getting the flue lined and reinstating the open fire instead. Its on the list!

    Thanks

Oh - PS - paid another £2k into the offset today!

Due to my OH leaving the forces and them giving him a nice big golden handshake we recently had some spare cash sitting in the bank. After much deliberation we've put some cash in an ISA, a rainy day account and decided my car does NOT need updating and will last many more years! So we have paid a lump sum of £4000 off the mortgage instead!
:j Quite excited to have started this and looking forward to the mortgage statement in January!

    Hi John,

We've an open fireplace but, rightly or wrongly, there are no vents. Suppose the wee draughts in the floorboards provide enough!

    Best wishes
