Kaz- we were the same, except my DH couldn't be late for work in the job he is in, so it was always me that was flexible.
Is the money any better in the new job? It would have to be significantly better to justify doing longer shifts- they really take it out of you.
As for the £400- maybe your m-i-l thinks ne needs the money to buy better quality food because she got given crispy chicken, waffles and frozen peas for tea. :rotfl: j/k I'd spend 10% of any windfall and put the rest against the mortgage.:DMember of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Well, i cashed in my mortgage pig today, and i have £49 to pay into my mortgage - still havnt replaced the LO who has gone to school yet, but this money is def extra for my mortgage, ive taken it straight down to the bank so i wont be tempted, and it will be transferred to my mortgage on Monday!!!
Also - looks like any extra Northern Rock can get will be appriciated by them!!!
Ohhhh - im now a fantastically fervent moneysaving super fan, i like that, much better than the geek i was just now!!!:T :rotfl:0 -
Hi everyone.
I have to say Kaz,my OH is quite good when it comes to the kids,we have to work round each other due to child care,so although it means we don't get days off together(unless we are on holiday) he is good, gets the kids ready, takes and picks them up from school, feeds them and I have to say is better at cleaning the house than me sometimes.
He even changes or is slightly late for some of his shifts sometimes if I am at work,I have to say the fact that we both work for the same company in the same shop does help a little.
good luck if you decide to take the new job.Mfit member no 13 original balance £44000

The money isn't any better in the new job. It is just a case of the new shifts being 07.30-20.00 or 19.30-08.00 or 07.30-15.30. So I could do 2 long days at a weekend (every other) 2 short days in the week while ds is at pre school and one night shift.
It would be better for me and the kids as I wouldn't be so shattered all the time. DH ought to be happier as he's always complaining about me not being around in the evenings whereas if I could do this shift pattern, I would only be out 4 evenings a fortnight.
It would mean that he would have to be late 2 mornings a week and be out for lunch twice a week. The only reason I can see for his boss etting sniffy (if he does) is because DH doesn't ever want to work late or go in early.
I've said before that if he has to pick up DS for lunch then I won't expect him back from work until later if it makes him overrun but he says he'll take it from time owing.
The pay would probably work out less for me overall as I would be doing less unsocial hours than I do at the moment but I would have to suck that up. It would mean a huge change for us to get me back into the land of the living!
I don't mind doing long shifts- I already do 11 hour shifts and the odd 14.5 hour one. I used to do about 4 12 hour days when I worked in a Nursing Home and thankfully this will never be as bad as that!
I know what I'd do with any windfall but don't know what he will do with it? I expect he'll stick it in the current account.
I haven't decided whether or not to apply for the job yet. I am going to draft the letter as I have a week for it to go in yet. Hopefully I can sit down and talk to DH this weekend and see what his real objections are. Ultimately if he won't compromise then I can't do it because someone has to be around for the children and they are my priority. (Besides which, I don't even know if I would get it or not!!!)
Not that I am trying to talk myself out of it but I think it would take a lot longer to clear the evil debt too.
In other news, I'm going to open up a BMW ISA (if there are any left when I get home in the morning!). I've been looking at bonds etc for most of the night and I reckon this is my best bet- let's just hope I'm right! I will invest the money I have saved to repay my Mum's loan so any interest I will either throw at the mortgage or split 50/50 between the loan and the mortgage- nah who'm I kidding?! It'll all go on the mortgage because the loan is interest free and I'll get rid of everything quicker that way!

Kaz- 14.5 hour shifts- isn't that illegal?- the most anyone is allowed to work is 13 hours, unless of course you're a junior doctor!
I'd ask your union what they think of the length of that shift.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

As a printer I work 12 hours a day minimum but often go over that. The most I have ever worked was last year on a 96 hour week and that included a 26 hour shift. But then again, it is my company and needs must. Probably kill me if this becomes long term but I do have plans for a new member of staff.Gordon Brown ate my hamster0 -
I am selling my fantastic Korg Triton keyboard and speakers on Ebay, I should pay off another £1200 next month.
I am unsure if to sell my car now, I really need a reliable car for my job so I might wait until next year and sell it then.
I plan to have it "all paid" up in 16 months or so, giving me some cash to prepare the house for rental.
Oh yes, and I plan to keep the mortage at £1 and reduce payments to 1p a month.0 -

No, we're not ever forced to do a 14.5 hour shift! It is 2 shifts back to back and only ever rostered if person doesn't mind. It only counts as a 12.5 hour shift too because of the breaks but I'd rather have less break and go earlier!
So DH and I have discussed the new job. I won't be applying for it now. He is unwilling to bend his working day to accomodate childcare. I have pointed out that it will cancel out any right he may feel he has to complain about my shifts interfering with life. We have decided to just continue as is at the mo and keep chucking money at the mortgage. This way we can see a definate end to shifts for me (albeit 6 years away). If anything comes up next year after DS has started school then I will have a rethink.
I have a bit of investing to do over the next few days to try and get some savings sorted. We have decided to split our savings in to 2 ISA's, 2 1 year bonds (So 10k is tied up for 1 year) and leave £2135 contingency savings.
This will leave some space in our high interest current accounts and enable me to use one A&L account to put my Egg mortgage stoozed repayments into until 1st July. That way I will earn interest on money that I need to repay Egg but is not part of the minimum payment. Whew!
We bought a laptop today and got quite a good deal on it. I have worked out my finances up until payday (22nd) and updated my sig accordingly.
At this moment it looks bloomin awful. I have £3425 awaiting transfer to my mortgage which won't all go over now until November. I don't want to incurr fees. We owe a fair amount to savings and it may get worse over the next month as there are a lot of things going out. These will be replaced though.
Worst case scenario is that we don't fully repay savings until end of challenge. So I need to pay a monthly minimum of £108.80 to repay the savings by then. The ISAs I will open will pay £201 each after 1 year so that is a bit more towards the total and I will have £400+ going into the Egg repayment pot each month so should net some decentish return.

OMG Kaz you make my head spin :rotfl: I sort of understand what you're doing and hats off to you and all your juggling
I was looking at the tesco credit card today at 0% for 12 months on tesco purhases and thinking about using it to buy our years shopping with but setting up a direct debit to pay the minimum each month. As we have a one account the food money would sit in the account till the end of the 12 months saving us interest.
However my DH has the reins of this account and I'm not sure if he's disciplined enough so I might have to transfer the food money to a new account but am not sure which one. Morgage interest is 6.7% caculated daily so I'm not sure if there's an account out there to make it worth it
Whew I hope that makes sense to someone else :rotfl:MFiT Member No 85
