  • Confession time.

Last night I made an impluse £500 purchase. It was something I'd been wanting for a while...:o

But good news - I am still overpaying by at least £1000 a month. Job situation is uncertain though - keep your fingers crossed for me!

Woah! The post from Andrea has freaked me out! Don't close this thread! Please!

And jobbingmusician, you were *going* to freak me out, lol, until you said you were still making overpayments of £1,000 a month. In that case, surely an impulse buy, even tho its £500, is do-able. What was it, anyway (Karmacat asks curiously)..........

I don't know if someone's already mentioned this (I hadn't seen it on this thread, but it is on ML's great diary) that ING Direct seem to be giving away £75 to new customers opening an account and putting in £2500 before 30 Sep. It looks like they give you the £75 the following week, and then you can withdraw all the money. http://www.ingdirect.co.uk/offer75/

There's also a £50 offer if you have only £1000 to stash away. http://www.ingdirect.co.uk/offer50/

Interest rate only 5% AER, so not worth keeping it there much longer, but I've just opened my account on-line to give it a go. Thought this would be particularly good for off-setters.

Sorry peeps.... I just phoned up ING to double check this... It only applies to the person origionally emailed this offer and not everyone :( Boooooo!!!

Am I being thick but what is your ignore list?? Never come across that before...

Am on the phone to ING now, as the web page doesn't say that you need to have been sent the email directly...

I'm still going ahead with my account and expect them to honour it (makes note of date and time of phone call...)

    DD, just rise above it.
It is impossible to have a one person argument as we saw yesterday.
We all have better things to be doing with our time (like paying off our mortgages!)

 Ok I'm now confused  I was told that it was for mailing resipients (sp?) only :rotfl: Think I'll try it and treat it as a gamble! :rotfl: Worst case I loose a couple of quid in the transferring and lower int for a few days but best case I gain an extra £75 :T It'll be done with some of my bathroom renovation money (the loan I took out recently) as the bathroom is taking way longer that planned to decide what I want and arrange for it all to be done!! That way if I get the £75 then that'll go straight on overpaying that loan!! :D he he he he... At least we'll find out quickly if it works!!

Dithering Dad http://corporate.visa.com/pd/consumer_services/consumer_ex_rates.jsp?src=ex_rez will let her see what rate she will get on her card for Euros- probably a whole lot better than taking money with her, especially if you have a Nationwide card with no foreign transaction charges.:D

It's harder to fritter away small amounts of money on rubbish when you pay by credit card. I find the less 'cash' we have to hand the less knick knacks we buy.

ps I'm glad we've only attracted one troll in 69 pages- and even then, like the number of pages, it just doesn't work well when you try it by yourself...:p Well done everyone for not rising to the bait, and keeping MFi3 troll free:j

  • Hi everyone,

As per my post a week or so back - I went to see the IFA on Monday and quizzed her on cashing in the endowment. I had infact received five offers from endowment purchasing companies, averaging about 1200.00 over the surrender value - that was a tip from another thread well worth following up.

The IFA carefully avoided telling me what I should do but she did say that it was clearly a potentially profitable policy if companies were making offers. She said the offers that were being made were probably a more accurate reflection of the value of the policy as it stands and this would in turn affect the final outcome due to the compound interest.

I hummed and ha'd and eventually decided to stick with it. It will still fall about 10-15K below target but it should still make an adequate profit at the end (fingers crossed). We were going to pay it into the mortgage so that is a bit of a dissapointment but instead we are going to mentally ring-fence it for the kids further education fees/home leaving. In twelve years our boys will be finishing uni/setting up home etc so a cash injection then will be welcome. Shame about the mortgage though, I was really looking forward to wiping off a decent chunk.

@ flib - we are thinking the same about ours - that it will be a useful cash injection at a time when our children may need some financial assistance and luckily the way we were able to re-jig our mortgage last year has made this possible and we dont have to rely on them to help pay off the mortgage anymore
