'incentivised firms to provide goods at a discount' why should firms give a discount to the workshy, or is the idea that the government gives the difference to the firm (and hence another handout to the unemployed).
They should be able to monitor their spending....free money after all. Easy way to stop being monitored....they should get a job!!0 -
Maybe we could apply the same scheme to child benefit payments and make sure it gets spent on childrens clothes and wholesome food etc rather than squirralled away in ISAs?Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0

You ONLY get free precriptions when you are on INCOME based JSA and I had to go 4 months in agony with an absess till I was put on income based JSA then I went to the dentist and they couldn't save the tooth so took it out costing you lovely tax payer more than a check up and some antibiotics would have cost 4 months previous. Plus no £ for an asthma inhaler so went without for 6 months.Johnnytwostep wrote: »and they get free prescriptions, and free dental treatment, reduced everything at the council. probably get a limo to the jobcentre every week too
I get nothing reduced at the council so keep coming up with stupid lists and go look up who CAN'T get housing benefits! We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Perhaps they could negotiate discounted travel so the unemployed could afford to use the transport to reach more job interviews?
Monitoring? You mean like in some kind of fascist state? I agree that the workshy need to be incentivised but not everyone who is unemployed is workshy. I guess you have never been unemployed?Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. yes i know its only for income based, and you said before you are on income based JSA.
Tell me why you cant get housing benefit then, and help with your mortgage or whatever housing you are in.
There you are costing the tax payer even more with your free prescriptions and dental.0 -
As a 40 percent taxpayer, I object to payment of benefits to Johnnytwostep, Who has gone on about scroungers, when they themselves are scroungers!, a classic case of calling the kettle black.
Thing with an card based system is that it will be only be able to be used in a limited number of big chain stores. This is the case in both the states and oz.
Card holders would not be able to use stores which do not have computerised point of sale equipment. You may well find that the card would be limited to the big four chains. This would be a problem with smaller towns which do not have any of the big four chains.
It is the duty of better off to help the less well off. Times are hard, as we
risk entering a triple dip recession.0 -
I'm not sure where people are getting the idea that this idea will only be applied to "problem families" alcoholics and drug addicts, Alec Shelbrooke MP was quite clear when he stated the following that:
Owing to the differing circumstances involved, this measure would not affect the basic state pension or disability benefits. For all other claimants, however, this move towards responsible spending would support the introduction of universal credit and the change from fortnightly to monthly welfare payments.

His proposal will affect all benefit claimants excluding those on the state basic pension and disability benefits. That includes claimants who work.0 -

I am hardly a scrounger, put more into society in terms of tax in a year than these bunch of workshy layabouts will ever in their lives. Plus as of some time next year i wont even get child benefit as I apparently earn too much. But its fine for the workshy to get benefits without ever earning anything.
I say help yourself, and leave those who cant be bothered to flounder and make a choice....get a job or get no money.0
