It's almost time to get started on the 2014 challenge! I can hardly believe that's another year gone past already! Nice to see a couple of the original posters back on site - hoping to make 2014 the best challenge year ever! 2014 will be a celebratory year for me, as it marks 15 years of challenges! :)

I'll get the new thread set up very soon and, in the meantime, keep up the good work and get ready to join me again next year. :D

Is there a 2014 thread? Hi everyone btw! All ok here.

Not yet, Nat, just preparing the 2014 challenge but the thread will be posted this month and I'll link to it from here soon. :)

I've been lurking on this thread for a little while, and I've been hoping for a 2014 version, as I think it'll help me achieve some of my plans for next year.

I'll watch out for the new thread - many thanks for doing this

I find that I generally go challenge crazy around this time of year, the challenges are great but a few months down the line I realise they are not for me. It was only this past month that I found a pay one debt off this year instead of the pay off all your debts this year haha the 1st one would have been more suited to what I was doing this year

Perhaps you should try joining in with our one-month December mini-challenge on the frugal forums - I don't bother posting those on here any more, just the main annual one gets included here. Baby steps and all that - can't expect to jump into a fully laden juggernaut and steer it round the twisty roads of household finances if you've never driven before, let alone driven a car, if you see what I mean. :)

  • Afternoon all, I hope everyone has had a good week.

My plans for a frugal weekend this week are:

    1. Finalise tax return - a good bit is now done but it still needs to be finished off. I am aiming to have it submitted by the middle of next week. Here's hoping for a tax rebate!

    2. Spending some time with my 5yo niece tomorrow - we will be putting up the Christmas tree, going to the park (weather dependant) and making crispie cakes.

    3. Finalise Christmas bits - including wrapping pressies and cards done.
  • Hi Everyone,

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading through everyone's posts. Well done to those who have paid off their CCs and mortgages and to those who have improved their finances by finding a job during 2013.

I was managing to hold my own until I recently when some totally unexpected outgoings (including £80 to get rid of a persistent flea problem!!!) have effectively blown the Challenge!

Never mind I have learned so much from living frugally this year and by reading all of the fantastic posts on MSE -I know that next year I will be more organised, save money and not be thrown by the unexpected!!

Thanks everyone. Happy Advent and here's to a MSE Christmas.

  • Help me out guys. There doesn't seem to be a board quite suitable for me. I have always been pretty OS and frugal, I have paid off my mortgage and have no debts. However, I have just four years before retirement and not much saved for a pension, and nothing to expect other than standard retirement pension. I need to save and be frugal as much as any of you, so is this the right forum for me? I am simply trying to avoid getting into debt in old age.

    Hi Living Proof,

Yes, you have come to the right place - we are all about frugal living and moneysaving for all reasons, not just a 'get out of debt' challenge. I left debt behind me several years ago but continued to run this challenge as I now need to get some added security for retirement. I hope you'll join us for 2014 challenge, which I'll post up soon. I don't post here all that often as I have other sites and forums running this challenge but I do try to keep up with the posts and answer any questions I may be asked.

Good luck for 2014 and onwards. :)

I don't mind running the 2014 if no one else wants to!

Sorry I've not been as active on the thread this year - it's been very busy and I've not been particularly frugal :o

I am determined to be very much back on the wagon for 2014, if you'll have me! :o

Hi SF and anyone else who missed my various posts.

I am already preparing the 2014 thread HERE, so no need to worry, it'll be up and running soon.

    Hope you are all well.
