I'm sure there are many who would perform the job for less.0 -

There are many jobs in the City, not to mention Whitehall and Westminster that people would happily do for a fraction of the salary and probably have the same outcome."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

I was beginning to agree with this thread until I read that drivel.
It can take well over a year to train a driver -thats not just pressing stop & go buttons and merely displays your ignorance of their role.
No: I am not a driver nor do I gree with strikes for their own sake however I DO know what it takes to qualify and what responsibilities rail/tube safety staff have.
For christsakes try to get an informed opinion before belittling others would you?
I agree, there are many jobs that are overpaid, add little social value and not unionised. Television presenters, City Traders, Non-exec Directors moonlighting from Parliament, aggressive tax avoidance consultants, venture capitalisms, bankers etc
Also there are many workers who do jobs of great social value who are underpaid and would be better paid if they joined a union.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -

So you replace a well trained and paid train driver with someone on minimum wage and give them a weeks training in button pushing.
How much would the fares drop? My bet is they would not drop at all.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -

Perhaps you should add Union Leaders to your list of overpaid socially useless people.
Ok you did not say it. What would you pay them for starting at 0400 or finishing at 0200 and being prepared to cover holiday periods?
Well maybe you should add them. You imply you agree with the others on the list.:)
Its easy to slag off unions but my point remains that many workers need to organise collectively but that does not have to mean striking at the drop of a hat.
The alternative that some people seem to prefer is that employers ride roughshod over their staffs who doff their caps and have no means of defending themselves but resigning. Do you favour that model?Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. The Victoria, Central and Jubilee lines are already driverless. A man sits in the drivers seat and presses the "open door" and "close door" buttons but he does not drive the train. The northern line is going to be converted next. In this sense these two lines are not really any different from the DLR.0 -

Read that in the Daily Mail did you:rotfl:0 -

My partner is an on call manager for a hospital between Christmas Day and Boxing Day. She'll get a £44 allowance for a 12 hour shift between 7pm and 7 am. This is on top of her normal weekly hours. Never does she complain. It's accepted as part of the job.
So to me. Its an attitude towards others. Why have the tube drivers chosen Boxing Day for the 3rd year running. Maximum inconvenience to the general public.0 -
and I yours.
My opinion is as valid as yours in this context as is anyone else for that matter.
I was quite happy to respect someone who had posted more actively than me, clearly not all those who are very active posters are worthy of such.
You chastised me in your first post on this topic accusing me of not doing research and then did not do your own!
You shot yourself in the foot I am afraid.Thinking critically since 1996....0
