I never understand how anyone falls for these scams. If someone phones you up and asks for your PIN number then its a scam. In fact if someone phones you up and asks for your card number it's probably a scam.

I do like the fact the victim believed 999 operated as an office reception and would put you through to any officer you were after :)

It's the courier scam, and so not exactly new. The main difference with this tale is that the caller is pretending to be from the police rather than the card company itself.

Mind you, I'd have smelt a rat the minute the pretend copper claimed that " that someone has hacked into the National Database". There is no National Database.

Oh yes, and the headline in the article 'How an utterly plausible con-trick left John Andrews £7,000 poorer' is utterly misleading. The banks have coughed up the £7k and John Andrews is actually better off as a result of receiving a fat fee from the DM for writing it.

There were so many signs here that the call wasn't genuine. The gullibility of the victim here probably explains many of the stories reported by the Daily Mail.

  • Yes, because the Police cancel and re-issue new credit cards all the time.

The Daily Mail re-writes the definition of 'utterly plausible'
Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear

The DM report sounds like a gullible fool to me. I dont know why i work when there are so many suckers that i could live off.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Maybe not stupid but too trusting or naive.

Sometimes I feel we have a choice between being naive and cynical. Which is worse?
