Yes, he said because the TV was on and I was watching it when the fault happens it was known as a "catastrophic failure of the components" or something along those lines.
That proves to me that he is an incompetent idiot incapable of diagnosis and repair! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Must agree with espresso, there is no way anyone can diagnose a fault like over the phone. It could be something as simple as a capacitor, which is available from thousands of place.
Reason he more than likely said that was, he knew it wasn't worth his time, as once you knew about cost to repair, you more than likely will say no.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -

Update guys, i've got another TV repair man coming round tonight to take a butchers and says he will quote me a price before he does any work on fixing it but he said it shouldn't be more than £50? Does that sound about right?I need a cig...

£50.00 would be fine for me.0

I'm claiming not under the warranty but under the Sale Of Goods Act, 1979.
I expect Tesco will make an offer of part of the value of your set, unless their own repair agent can fix it.
Have Tesco advised you to get your own repair done? I wouldn't proceed unless they have agreed to this...0 -

If he is at all competent he will know from past experience whether it is worth his while even bothering to look at it, it's probably his way of basically saying 'I am not prepared to waste my time on it'.
It could just be a capacitor but probably more likely to be a PSU blowing up.said its impossible to get parts from a Technika TV anyway so its easier just to buy a new one.
He is probably right in that if it is a component specific to Technika parts will not be available so unless it's a part common to all TV'S it won't be worth wasting time on.
It all depends on how desperate the engineer is for work, too many customers expect repairs for next to nothing.
When I used to repair stuff we had a minimum payment of £80 whatever time a repair might take.0 -
I'd pay £50 but probs wouldn't go over £60/65 just because it'll be cheaper just to buy a new TV with a new warranty and decent make to be honest.
Will find out later what the TV repair guy says when I get home from work and report back1I need a cig...
