Technika Digital LCD TV

Hi guys!

Last night my TV died. Just switched itself off and now wont even turn back on. I tried changing fuses but to no avail.

I called Tesco support and told them what had happened and they're sending me out a "out of warranty" form.

Does anyone know what this entails and the process of getting my TV replaced and my main issue is I still have the receipt but it has "staff discount" on it. I'm not a member of staff and a friend of mine who is came with me when I bought it. Will they look at this unfavourably when trying to get the TV replaced or repaired?

Thanks!
I need a cig...

Don't know about Tesco policy of staff sales, but the ones i do know about, do frown upon staff sales for non family members and can get that person into trouble.

What is the purchase date on the invoice?
Sounds like it's out of it's standard 1 yr warranty, if they're sending you this form? Is it to get it repaired?
If it's just out of warranty, I think you could argue that it didn't last a reasonable amount of time. That said, those Technika TV's are pretty atrocious, IMO.

I doubt they will even look at the staff discount - all you need is proof of purchase, but I also doubt even without that you'd get Tesco to replace a TV out of warranty, or they'd have a longer one.
If it was, say, 12/24 months old, you might be able to argue that it wasn't up to the job, which is a whole different matter.

If its out of warranty, you will ahve to pay for any repair.

Unless of course you get it looked at by an independant company who can verify that the fault was inherent. If its found to be inherent, you will get this fee back. If it has just broken out of warranty then you have to bear the cost.

Its up to you. You havent said how old the TV is.

And for those knocking Technika, Ive had 2 now for between 6 and 8 years without a pick of bother.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Don't forget that Tesco could refuse to deal with you as it sounds like the actual purchase was made by your friend and not by you.
As such, you would have no contract with tesco and they have no legal obligation towards you.

I agree. Terrible supermarket brand best avoided.

Still best avoided, your experience is the exception not the norm.

Of more concern is the fact that your friend may find himself in trouble if it's found that this discounted purchase has not ended up being for his own personal use. I'd be speaking to my friend before presenting Tesco with any receipt if I were the OP.
  • Thanks guys! I've let my friend know the TV has broke etc but he doesn't work there anymore now anyway.

I called a TV repair man this morning who told me the fault was whats know as a "catastrophic failure" and as such wont be able to be repaired. He said this is standard and pretty common amongst Technika TVs.

When I called up Tesco I had to give them my name which if they check their records they may realise nobody by my name has worked in that store.

I've had the TV just over a year, the warranty expired on 23/11/12 as the TV was purchased on 24/11/12

Looks like you're unlucky then, Tesco are unlikely to replace a TV out of warranty if it's a catastrophic failure.
I advise buying a well known brand in future...

Not a very good one if he made that diagnosis over the phone!

I think you may have mis read that post. I'm hoping the OP "called" the repair man to attend.
However, it's also possible that the repair man was reluctant to visit because of the terrible reputation Technika has...
  • Yes, he said because the TV was on and I was watching it when the fault happens it was known as a "catastrophic failure of the components" or something along those lines. He said its impossible to get parts from a Technika TV anyway so its easier just to buy a new one.

I'm claiming not under the warranty but under the Sale Of Goods Act, 1979.
