Why is my internet speed drastically reduced?

Sometimes if you reboot the so-called Super Hub it speeds up for a bit.0

Hi,
Virgin Media actually operate a quite draconian Traffic Management Policy, which, after quite an amount of user pressure, they went public with last year. And here it is -
http://help.virginmedia.com/system/selfservice.controller?CONFIGURATION=1002&PARTITION_ID=1&TIMEZONE_OFFSET=&USERTYPE=0&VM_CUSTOMER_TYPE=Cable&CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=2781
So they advertise all these super fast speeds, but won't they allow their users to use them to there full potential.0 -

Oh come on, the download limits, for normal users are more than allowable.
The problem is people go on the cheapest bundle and then absolutely annihilate it, then complain they get throttled.
If you want a high speed service pay for it, even a 60mb service throttled is higher than the average connections with every other provider.0 -
If you are having speed issues on wireless - tried wired and see whether that solves the problem. If you have a superhub have a search online and you'll find lots of people think they are s***e and use them as a modem with a separate wireless router.0

The speed was OK yesterday but today it is back to normal, taking about 15 or 20 minutes to download one page. Funniest thing when I eventually got onto my account on Virgin online the other day, the first page said "welcome to your superfast 30mb speed download", it had taken me 20 minutes to download that page !!
What a load of tosh. Frightened to ring them as I will lose my temper if they try to come up with excuses which they have done in the past. Let's be honest, they give out the fastest speeds to the higher payers, I pay a full rate of £25 per month for internet but as I say they are telling me I get the latest and fastest 30mb download speed but that is only intermittent, my point is I pay for this fulltime and don't get it when there is an overload. In other words they "lie" because they are switching it around to people who pay the most or complain the most! Virgin sucks but the others are probably the same. Latecomer - you are being a bit technical for me. All I know is how to switch on the laptop and where the leads plug in, I don't understand the technicalities of it all. It is no wonder to me that the older generation do not know how to use the internet, you have to be a techie to understand the technical side and things change so often these days, you can't keep up with the changes made. I am 62 and afraid I am a bit technically overloaded now, I want to be able to switch it on and away it goes, after all I am paying for a service, if there is a technical problem the service provider should be sorting it out, that's how it used to be years ago. Too much to hope for I suppose in these days of poor service for high cost !0 -
I have just read the traffic management policy and I have to say it is all a load of bullshyte, they say they only limit and reduce speeds between 5pm and midnight and weekends. Today is Wednesday and all day it has been painfully slow. Also this has only been happening during the last week, for months and months it has been fine so what's the problem ? Virgin are good at bullshyting people, I have had quite a bit of it when I have complained in the past. Let's face it their customer service must be trained well on how to lie to people. I only use my internet for very basic stuff, emailing, surfing for shopiing etc.
Sorry I am a bit too old in the tooth to take what people (service providers) tell me as truth when they are trying to make excuses for not providing the service I am paying for, especially when they print loads of statistics and technical jargon to try and fool people. I think they work on the assumption that if you print loads of complicated information that people will believe that they really care and am trying to resolve customer's issues. Good ploy !0 -

You may not be downloading much but plenty of others are. The telephone/internet infrastructure is only capable of handling a certain amount of traffic. Once that limit is reached it slows to a crawl - and everyone suffers. Exactly like a motorway in the rush hour.
The ISPs are fully aware of this but the solution is generally out of their hands. This is why you don't tend to get much help from their laughingly called "help lines". If you move to another ISP there is probably not going to be much improvement - unless they are using a different infrastructure.
My 16mbs service from O2 was superb for about 3 years then it collapsed to being almost unusable at evenings/weeekends. I have now shifted to BT Infinity, which is giving me almost 75mbs - this is great until everyone else moves to this and clogs up the nice new lengths of fibre and I am back where I was !!
As you say, people like me are being made to suffer for people who are heavy users and it is not fair. I would rather they are honest and tell me I am not getting what I have paid for and reduce my subscriptions but I will not hold my breath on Virgin doing anything that honest where money is concerned.
I have tried rebooting but it makes no difference. Virgin know what they are doing and know what we are NOT getting, but to get the truth from them is one step too far. I will be terminating my subscription with Virgin pretty soon now and find a new hobby away from the crap TV, and internet (it's a close call which is worse, the rubbish tv or the internet)! I will not miss the TV with more adverts than programme and pixellating pictures cracking up when their DVD movies and long running series which have been on dozens of times before break down. (If it weren't for hubby it would have been gone long ago!). Virgin are about as professional a service provider as a fireman without a hose or fire engine ! Freeview for me and as for internet, I will go for the cheapest available, if it is slow I won't be losing anything anyway with the speed I am getting but I will be saving about £20 per month!0 -
Further to other suggestions, try a wired connection. You probably already have an ethernet cable, which looks something like this...
Just plug one end into one of the yellow sockets on the back of the Superhub and the other into a corresponding socket on the computer. Try it when your connection is slow and see if it makes much difference.
The Superhubs have a pathetic wireless capability and that may help identify the problem.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards.
