well i went to homebase to buy this ammonia and guess what none there they said that it had been recalled.

i contact local pet shop who were astounded to hear i wanted ammonia she was on the ceiling she said do you want to kill the fish or what I told her what i wanted it for and she was astonished. in the end i had to put the phone down.

she is not understand the concept of fishless cycling at all.

So i am at a loss

That just proves how completely out of touch and ignorant pet shops are about fish.Poor Jo,as per post above, does not have any choice but to cycle her new filter with fish in the tank. But most new fishkeepers do.

I will see if I can find out where you can get some ammonia from. Please don't be disheartened, the wait will be well worth it to have healthy fish from the start once all this is sorted.

Edit i see you have it sorted now after going on PFK.

However.I thought as the tank is only 60 litres though that you were going down the tropical road.So what sort of fish are you intending having because goldfish will not last long in a tank that size, however,I know you said you didn't want goldfish in the beginning,so I'm hoping that is still the case.Perhaps take a look at the coldwater section of PFK and ask what other coldwater fish there are.

White cloud mountain minnows could be kept in a tank that size and may even breed so that would be interesting for your son. There are several posts about them in the "other coldwater fish" forum.

Please don't feel dumb. You want to know and want to get it right,i just wish more people were like you,and cared enough to ask questions first BEFORE any fish suffer through ignorance or bad advice.Have you read just how many people start with

"Why are my fish dying,i bought a 15 litre tank and the shop tested my water after a week and it was fine then sold me 2 goldfish so i did everything right.............."

(well no actually you did everything wrong )but you can't blame people for believing the shop can you?

Of course the water is going to test fine after a week. There are no fish in it!! Many places just want to sell you the tank, then the fish, then of course all the medications when the fish get sick and then some more fish when they die.....and on and on it goes.Until they wake up one day and realise hey this can't be right.Perhaps i had better look for advice elsewhere. Then they realise .

So at PFK we are always glad that people ask first. No question is a dumb one if it means it will prevent a fish from suffering and that is the main aim of the forum.
  • The last two died last night. One actually in my hands as I was trying to coax him to the bubbliest water.

He had three days to do something after finding them, yet left them frightened and struggling. Because apparently to him, if the swimbladder is 'gone' there's no point in bothering.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

Oh i am so sorry Jo.The ammonia spike in the tank must have been horrendous and sadly too much damage already done for you to save them even with the massive water change. What an absolute idiot.

Please don't beat yourself up though,he gave you the impression he knew what he was doing.Doesn't stop you feeling very angry and very upset though.
