A Seasonal Warning for Pet Owners

On the back of the Morrisons Christmas Pud adverts
(found here if anyone is interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUa4WWeFmPI)

Can I just remind all MSE'rs that Christmas Pudding, or rather the raisins contained within it can be lethal to a dog.

    Douche.

Moving on...I didn't realise raisins were bad for dogs! Mind you, mine has eaten chocolate in abundance over the years and hasn't even had so much as bad wind!

If you told someone, they wouldn't believe it.

Trolling takes on new levels doesn't it?

Anyway, back OT I only recently realised and I've shared grapes with my Westie Bob on several occasions. I often share fruit with him so when someone told me I could have killed him I was horrified. You just don't think that something as healthy as a grape or raisin could be so lethal to a dog.
  • So it's grapes and therefore raisins that are bad? How come? I always give bit's of fruit and veg to the pooch. Bit worried now :(

Maybe you should research whats healthy for your pet before deciding to have one?

    Would seem a sensible precaution......

    Dear Goater.
    Troll off.
This is my last response to you, and hopefully from anyone else who is taking this thread seriously.
    Sincerely
    Pullip.

Minnie, apologies for the wiki link but it is accurate:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grape_and_raisin_toxicity_in_dogs

Grapes and raisins cause renal failure in dogs. Fruit and veg such as carrots and potatoes etc are fine, but Onions, Grapes, Raisins etc are not. Also worth mentioning that apple pips are are the banned list as well, though the apple itself is fine.

Our vets have a "12 poisons of Xmas" poster up - except that I ONLY go there when my dogs are poorly (although I went in about 2 weeks ago to pick up their blood test results after they gave blood to the PBB) so it's wasted on me, i've looked for it on our vets website but nothing there either. but I did find a similar one here
ISTR it included ivy, xmas tree and yew all poisonous and chocolate (dark is worse) obv.
ONION - apparently onions are poisonous to dogs (I didn't know this) even onion gravy (check the recipe yes even Bisto powder and some instant gravy mixes have onion powder in it!)

Being prepared is Making sure you know the emergency arrangements for vets (and GP and dentist) over xmas.

    have a cool yule y'all

Sweeteners have recently been highlighted as poisonous for dogs too.

Re chocs, my sisters whippet x ended up on a drip three years ago having munched through half a box of christmas chocs, so they really are poisonous to dogs, its not just a myth.
  • Just recently got a puppy and this was the first I'd heard of it.

Our last dog used to play with grapes but didnt eat them.

On another note, discovered pineapple stops them eating what they shouldnt.
