I know it's a case of shutting the stable door but get yourself an extension lead with a surge proctector built in because so far as I can see it would be a spike or surge that would cause a problem rather than a power cut per se

You haven't stated your TV make and model number but there's a good chance it's a simple capacitor failure, costing a few quid to fix. This type of failure is not "caused" by a power cut but tends to show up after the TV has been switched off. In other words, you'd have seen it if you simply unplugged the TV for a while.

You won't be successful in your claim for compensation as the supplier would need to be negligent. If an unforeseen outage takes out your sensitive kit, then there is an expectation you should have provided protection for it (in the same way PC's need a virus checker).

I have a device that wars of significant under or over voltage, and a atoms went off when out nominal supplied voltage reached 283v AC. Light bulbs would be brighter (and burn out faster) but since most sensitive stuff is never fed directly, but via transformers - it is invariably these that will blow first. Hopefully just a fuse, but sometimes more.

The real issue is rarely over voltage, but voltage/current inrush when services a reprovided. Anything plugged in and ON is going to take the full hit, so it is important to turn sensitive stuff OFF until hing stabilise.

As to my over voltage problem, they were unaware as it was a faulty component at mush station that only affected one third of customers connected to part of the three phase supply. But fix it they did - and my V dropped to a manageable. 242v.
