Power Cuts - damaged my TV

hi ,

Hope you can help me !

We've a contract with EONenergy , but we had 4 power failures for the last 3 weeks.
Since the last one our Plasma TV started having issues.
It was on during the power cut. The screen is flickering for 10 minutes when we switch it on.
I've contacted EON customer department and they told me :''Any claims of damage following power cuts or interruption of supply should be directed to the electricity distributor in your area whuich is EDF on telephone number 0845 6014516 or0845 234 0040.''

So I've called EDF, they confirmed we had 4 power failures, with duration about 4 hours for the past 3 weeks, but they cannot cover any damage on our hardware.

Any ideas if I can get compensation from one of them to repair my TV.
It's out of warranty now :(

Thanks very much !!!!!

You'd have to prove that the fault occurred at the time of one of the power cuts, I can see no way to do that.
And even then they could plead coincidence as a defence. The burden of proof would be on you.
By all means go via the small claims process, but I think you'd be on a hiding to nothing.
Put a UPS on your TV if you get regular power cuts.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

It is not EDF that supply the network, I can't remember the name Western something (but it may vary area to area) but you are unlikely to get recompsense from other than your houshold contents insurance.

EDF actually sold their power distribution business (DNO) to UK Power Networks some time ago! (what were originally South Eastern Electricity, London Electricity & Eastern Electricity)

Western Power Distribution (in the South West).

  • I have heard of compensation paid. But it has been in obvious cases where they have wiped out half the electrical equipment in a village or the like.
A one of piece of kit. Computer say no.

Hi, try asking a few neighbours if they have had any appliance failures.

If it is just a straight forward power cut then you will probably not get anywhere.

If anyone one else has encountered failures there may have been an overvoltage and you would have more hope in getting some help.

Having said that, if it were an overvoltage you would normally have several faulty appliances.

Have you checked everything else in the house including phone chargers, freezers and other items that might not appear to be obviously faulty?
  • hi,

It's only our TV, we had a problem with the router, but it's working fine now.

I guess, my Christmas present this year will have to be brand New TV.

Thanks very much to everyone for your answers!

I hope you have a lovely Christmas :)
