It is completely relevent in this context as some other staff offered to swop off so she could spend Christmas day with her kids but weren't allowed to.

On a more personal note I'm working the holiday through choice Christmas Day, Boxing Day NYE and NYD as when MY son was small everyone I worked with made sure (without me asking ) that anyone with small children didn't have to work Christmas day...and although I work in a different company now I feel I'd like to volunteer to ensure no-one with small children gets lumbered with it. (NYE is a no brainer as I hate NY drunks and people moaning about what a crap year they have had isn't really my thing) FWIW I think your attitude stinks -I have no time for parents who pull the "but I've got kids"card at every turn -but I don't think the OP is doing this ....and if her collegues had no problem with it-it's rather pathetic that her manager (and you) do. If staff can sort their shifts out in an adult and amicable fashion -why not !!

Actually I went out of my way to point out that I wasn't saying the OP was doing this. I was just making the point that I think it's exceptionally arrogant for people with small children to assume they have more of a right to time off than anyone else. I have come across a number of people with this attitude in my time.

its not that she doesnt like me, she tells me all the time how much of a good worker i am etc, she just likes to remind us all who is boss i think, she's like this with us all most the time

think il mention it to her next time im in, she what she says about it.

What is the actual policy on swaps.?

anything other than "as long as the shifts are covered the policy states its ok to swap"

like working time directive or pre/post approval

If this is a I will show you whos boss then not a good manager.

This could be considered as a form of bullying if there is no business need and a policy that cover the sutuation that is being blocked for no reason.

    edit :

Just to add there is a saying, pick your battles

so think about the consiquences if you want to take this further.
  • she got moved from her last position due to her attitude with the staff.

think ill mention it to her about the staff cover, but am going to look for a different job after xmas anyway.

    thanks for the replies

Maybe nothing to loose by just swaping shifts and not saying anything till later or very close to the time(complying with any policy on logging who worked when).

will the manager be in over the holiday period?
  • no, shes off on holiday so she wont be in, see its like one rule for one and another for others, everyone else was told they couldnt put hols in, yet she's off and she she give one of the other staff the time off, and that member of staff whos off is the same as all of us, same job title, same pay etc.

I think we need to not get carried away here. It might not be fair but it is legal. And some of the advice is getting very unwise. Swapping shifts and not saying anything until the last moment doesn't get the swap agreed, and if the manager has already said no, then you can get into trouble for doing it. You either resolve this with the manager, or you go formal and submit a grievance. You don't start devising elaborate ploys to get what you want. That way lies disciplinary action. This is not about whether the manager is right or fair. It is about dealing with complaints appropriately. It may not make you popular with the manager, but if you must go over their head and can show a way to resolve those to higher management then they are more likely to agree with you.

Funny how the season of goodwill always throws up issues like this. Remember from the Managers point of view he has to keep the place running at its best for the good of the service users, the overall goodwill of all of the staff and I guarantee you that the offers to swap build up resentment and issues of missed payback for a long time to come.

Maybe this is why she wants you to cover the shifts? You're a good worker and she feels she can rely on you?

maybe, but it certainly doesnt feel like that!
  • ok, so latest.......

mentioned this to the supervisor and so did another collegue, the other collegue got a right shouting at saying its got nothing to do with her who she gives holidays to etc and said she is going to pull me when she sees me.

i know its got nothing to do with me who she gives hols to but it was the fact that no one could take xmas or the new year off and then decides to give the newest member of staff the week off,

also i found the sheet that stated part time staff to cover 8 hours of the xmas period (im doing 16) and fulltimers to cover at least 18, im already 9 hours over my contracted hours this month but she has said i cant share one of my shifts with one of the fulltimers whos covering less than me.

anyone have any advice or know anything i should say when she pulls me?
