staff cover christmas period

hi,

i work in a 24/7 care for learning disabilites.

for the christmas period (3 bank holiday days) part-tim,e staff had to cover at least 8 hours and full time staff to cover at least 12 hours.

the problem i have is i am a part timer and one of the otrher part timers is covering 16 hours each but one of the full timers is doing a sleep-in on xmas eve so doesnt get up till 7 and they finish at 8 so efectivley they are only covering 1 hour over the xmas period.

the other problem i have is we were told we couldnt put any hols in over this time but the manager has give the same fulltimer new years eve week off as annual leave.

can someone tell me if im being unreasonable about this or do you think this is unfair? and what i can do about it.

thanks

What do you want to happen?

    what can you do?

Complain to the manager and if that does not work the managers manager : repeat.

it may be that fulltimers*12 + part timers*8 is more than 72(3*12)
  • there is 12 members of staff who work there, and only 2 of us have young kids and its us too who are doing the 16 hours cover.

i think its unreasonable but wanted other peoples opinions to see if im the one being unreasonable before i say something to the manager

    not relevent

12 * 8 is 96 so the first issue is the min cover requirements are only 72hr you have double cover.

You need something more than it's just not fair.

    find other stuff.

You have the holiday which is off policy.

The other thing is you need to have an alternative plan if you want to change the current shift(the answer could be yes, touch), or change policy for next year.
  • ok, thanks for the reply

i just think its a bit cr*p how im in xmas night shift and new years day night shift, dont mind at all the new years shift but i wasnt even allowed to change my shift for xmas day especially when all the other staff who dont have kids said they wud swap me. and i said i could do any of the shift boxing day. but i suppose ill just have to get over it!

Now if they are not allowing swaps thats may change things.
(as I said look beyond it's not fair)

is this the manager this time or is there a policy

What is the swap policy other times?

Do you pull the I've got kids card sometimes say when they are not well and dad is working.

    look at the big picture.

Whether or not you have children is irrelevant. It annoys me when people try to claim they have more right to time off than others because they have children. Everyone has their own reasons for needing time off and their personal circumstances are just as valid. (Not saying you are doing this but as children were mentioned I wanted to make the point).
  • its the manager, as long as the shifts are covered the policy states its ok to swap.

i never pull the 'ive got kids card' i do night shifts mainly so the kids are always in bed at home with their dad, once or twice a mnth i do day shift, and i always can get someone to look after them if there bad if i am at work, so im never off with child care issues.

OK so you have to go to or over the manager on the swap policy.

    let's be blunt

Why don't they seem to like you or don't they trust the others to do those shifts.

IN my expereince with the NHS shift allocation on 24/7/365 is not about fair
  • its not that she doesnt like me, she tells me all the time how much of a good worker i am etc, she just likes to remind us all who is boss i think, she's like this with us all most the time

think il mention it to her next time im in, she what she says about it.

It is completely relevent in this context as some other staff offered to swop off so she could spend Christmas day with her kids but weren't allowed to.

On a more personal note I'm working the holiday through choice Christmas Day, Boxing Day NYE and NYD as when MY son was small everyone I worked with made sure (without me asking ) that anyone with small children didn't have to work Christmas day...and although I work in a different company now I feel I'd like to volunteer to ensure no-one with small children gets lumbered with it. (NYE is a no brainer as I hate NY drunks and people moaning about what a crap year they have had isn't really my thing) FWIW I think your attitude stinks -I have no time for parents who pull the "but I've got kids"card at every turn -but I don't think the OP is doing this ....and if her collegues had no problem with it-it's rather pathetic that her manager (and you) do. If staff can sort their shifts out in an adult and amicable fashion -why not !!
