    You should be able to use the same lead from your laptop to the TV in the PS3 (HDMI). If they have lost the power lead, have you got a desktop PC?, if yes, its likely the power lead from that will work in the PS3.

    PS3 uses a figure of 8 lead
    PC uses a kettle lead(no idea on the correct terms)
    however many things around the house will use a figure 8
    all moot as the OP seems to have given up

    Blu-Ray's will (or at least should) only play on an HDCP-compatible screen, you shouldn't be able to play them through an external VGA monitor for example (to prevent easy ripping).

    No, some PS3's use the figure of 8 lead but a lot of them use the big kettle lead (mine is from 2008 and has a kettle lead) as found with most desktop PCs.
