Most people make mistakes yes, but I would bet that most of those mistakes are not criminal.

Good luck, hope all goes well for you. You've made a bad mistake and paid for it.
We as humans ALL make mistakes, that's where we get a lot of our experience of life from.
Ignore the holier than though perfect people on here and get on with living your life:)

Since when did we become a society where disapproving of theft makes someone "holier than thou"?

You are not the poor blokes judge and jury are you?!
It was £30 that he ADMITS to taking, REGRETS taking and he lost his job.
He will also have trouble getting another job because of this.
I'm sure he knows he's done wrong without having it rammed down his throat on here.
Where has empathy and compassion gone?
The amount of people who come on these benefit boards for help and end up getting judged is beyond a joke.
May as well change the name from 'benefits and tax credits' to 'Judge Judy's' or 'Kangaroo Court.'
Load of internet bullies with nothing better to do!

So in that case all people who steal should be locked up and the key thrown away then?
Or even better lets cut off their hands and then lock them up and throw away the key?
Seems like thats right up a few peoples street on here:(
Never heard of rehabilitation of offenders?
Yes, of course there should be some sort of punishment. Well he's lost his job and struggling to survive. Isn't that punishment enough?

You might notice, if you read back, that the OP regrets losing his job rather than the theft and only admitted to it after he was caught. People are only considered rehabilitated if they regret their actions (not the result of their actions) and exhibit genuine remorse, neither of which the OP has done.

How do you know that? How do you know what he has said to the people in his life that matter to him, to the people he used to work with?
I really dont think the op needs to 'exhibit genuine remorse' on an internet forum to strangers.
He came here for advice, not to be judged.
Why should he need to express regret on here to you?

As he hasn't said anything, why then do you assume that he's remorseful and rehabilitated? All the OP has mentioned is his bad luck at the timing which led to his being caught.

As far as what he tells his friends, the fact that " most of them have either laughed and called my a dozy git or understood" doesn't suggest remorse either. What it does suggest is that they, like you, share his low morals.

And with that, I'm done. I don't need judgement from internet strangers.

Thank you to everyone else for your advice. Thorsoak: reel your f***ing neck in.

Its a sad sign of the times that three people thanked that post. You STOLE from your employer and then openly asked on a forum, did you really think no one was going to comment?

hmmmm phone or job?, phone or reputation?, phone or security?, phone or self respect? obviously the phone wins every time.

As i said the first time, internet bully.
You know nothing about my morals, low or otherwise.
My opinion of you is a critical, judgemental fool who spends their whole life on a forum making people feel bad:p
