This runs really close to benefit fraud, and may if you are unlucky lead to prosecution, if the claim exceeds 2K.0 -
Knowing you'd be unemployable and ineligible for benefits was probably the reason they gave you the choice in the first place. Probably felt you were already going to be punished enough to not want to get you a criminal record to boot.
Consequences of actions, innit? [shrug]I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
Why did you only take £30? if your gonna do somthing like that you should make it worthwhile.
After being in retail for 5 years did you not think to make sure it was accounted for?
If £30 made the difference, why nit just ask for a payrise?0 -

I only needed £30. The money wasn't for a new TV or whatever, it was to cover my phone bill which was leaving my bank in the next few days. I'm not greedy, I only took what I needed. Not saying that justifies it, btw. Just explaining why I didn't take a larger sum.
It was accounted for. We have an auditor do his thing twice a year, and my dumb luck was that he came in the day after I took the money. He was the only person who could've ever noticed it, and there was a window of only a few days that the CCTV could be used as evidence. Just very unlucky timing. The method in which the money is taken is so easy and 95% untraceable but I was constantly hearing of other managers being caught and fired by the auditor.
I had asked for a pay rise, many times. I was third in command but spent a lot of my time running the store. Feeling underpaid and unappreciated doesn't come close.
At the moment though I'd rather be underpaid and unappreciated rather than sat on my !!!! at home bored out of my tree.0 -
Shelter? Seriously? Would it come to that?
Well, you're the one who said ...I have rent, bills, car insurance to pay. I don't have anywhere to shack up or any family I can move in with. If my landlord doesn't get his rent, I essentially get put on the street.
You don't say what sort of place you're renting, but assuming that you're single, you need to be prepared for the fact that even if you get housing benefit it may not cover your full rent. And even if you get JSA, it's not going to be enough to cover things like car insurance.
Shelter is a good source of information and worth checking out their website fo advice if you end up struggling to meet the rent and face the possibility of ending up on the street.0 -
Was your telephone bill so important that you risked your reputation on getting it paid? Had you been without food, or about to be evicted, I could possibly feel some sympathy for you.
But for a phone bill? Is it surgically attached to your ear?0 -

No, but it is surgically attached to my bank account, and thus my credit rating. If I go overdrawn, I get fined. If my phone bill doesn't get paid, I get cut off. Both scenarios result in my credit taking a hit.
I'm not here to defend my actions, there are plenty of people in my life that I've had to explain myself to regarding this, and thankfully most of them have either laughed and called my a dozy git or have understood. I'm here to seek advice on what I can do in the s***ty situation I've put myself in.0 -

I sometimes despair of the younger generation ...your credit rating is worth more than honesty??? I think you've got to do a bit of growing up and sort out your priorities!
Unless you change your attitude you are going to find yourself deeper in the soft stuff than you are already! You are asking for advice as to what benefits you can get from the State because you've screwed up - the sort of person that every mother can be proud of ...not!0 -

And with that, I'm done. I don't need judgement from internet strangers.
Thank you to everyone else for your advice. Thorsoak: reel your f***ing neck in.0 -
