Comet TV, 4 months old developed fault where do I stand?

  • OP - I've exactly same problem. I phoned and emailed JVC. They replied:
"Your TV is a model that was directly imported by Comet and sold by them under an exclusive Sales and Service agreement. They are responsible for all support on these products. JVC(UK) has no service or support information or spare parts for these models. Having said this, we are of course aware of the current situation with regard to Comet and we are currently investigating what support we can offer on these TVs."
Bought for me as a gift, on credit card. Does that give me any other course of action? (Sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm new here!)

Have a read of MSE's Section 75 Refunds article.

The purchaser's credit card issuer are equally responsible with Comet for performance of the contract.
You should get whoever gave the tv to you to progress this... possibly without mentioning the 'gift' bit. ;)
  • Excellent - thank you. I'll bear that in mind in future...because... having just checked it turns out it was a debit card not a credit card. So it seems we're stuffed :(
  • My mum paid £300 for a new JVC TV in September from Comet - or as it now turns out a Vestel TV! If you buy something badged JVC you assume it's a JVC product - not some third-rate Chinese rubbish! It stinks and needs to be investigated and outlawed.

FYI, Vestel is a Turkish manufacturer, although the Panel could well have been made in China or Taiwan but so what, most of the world's best and well known manufacturers have products produced in these countries!

Does the TV suddenly perform worse than it did when she first bought it now you have the knowledge of who manufactured the main components?
  • Well no in as far as it never worked when we got it and it still doesn't now! Comet fobbed her off by saying her aerial signal wasn't good enough - probably in full knowledge they were going bust. I've since tried it on my aerial which we use quite happily and it picks up no channels on that either. It's not the fact that JVC use another company to manufacture that I object to - it's the fact that they are allowed to wash their hands of responsibility for a product that bears their name.

do all companies do this? get a cheap tv and allow others to stick their name on it?

I'll be avoiding JVC completely after this

Toshiba do exactly the same (with Vestel) with some of their cheap TV's.

I don't really see what the issue is - a "Dell" or "Apple" or even one of the Korean 27" monitors (Shimian) is actually largely an LG or Samsung display panel.
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

How exactly are they doing that? Does it not have a JVC manufacturer's warranty?

How did she pay? If she paid by credit card then under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act the CC provider are jointly liable for the performance of the contract, including any Sale of Goods Act liabilities.
