Also bear in mind that whilst you can continue to drive the car until the old mot expires even though it failed this one. You can still be prosecuted for driving a defective vehicle now you know it has faults. It's a very grey area in the law.
  • I have been using the same garage for 5 years, however this year I decided to use another garage who have quoted me this £600. Thanks everyone for your help.

And thats your problem. New customer = new money.

As I've said, this shouldn't be a big issue. If we were talking about having half the chassis welded up then yeah I could understand that quote but we're only talking a few big things and the rest is trivial stuff.

Take out the duff bulbs, go to halfords and buy some identical ones and fit them along with those nice new windscreen wipers you bought while you were in there. Thats two MOT failures fixed. Fill up your screen wash. If you still get slow flow, you probably need to clean the nozzles with a needle.

The only things you need to have dealt with by someone are your wishbone, shock, brake hoses and tyre.

Or try the range for bulbs. About a quid and seem to do alright. Get decent wipers though.

If your on a budget you can often get part-used tyres for about £25 fitted on your sized wheels.

If its actually the brake hose at each corner then it may well be more straight forward than welding new brake pipes.

He advice to use a council test center is spot on. Or try mot max, I've used them a number of times and think they are good

It ain't grey at all, it a clear cut black and white. If the defects are as described.

used to own one. (don't judge),

Yea that's overpriced brake hose + fitting plus everything apart from 8 and 9 no more than £190 and that includes the tires so cannot see the last 2 being £400 worth of work

With MOT's now done on computer, if your car fails then the old MOT is automatically void from that point.

    Your cars is -

    a) no longer insured.
    &
    b) not worth spending £600.
    Never Knowingly Understood.

  • I work at a garage and I would estimate the following prices (garage prices)

Nonsense, your old mot is still in force till expiry (info from vosa).
But you would know about any defects from the fail so drive at your risk depending what the fails were.

Most insurances just state your car must be in a road worthy condition.

  • use this as an opportunity to get a car that isn't a Ka, now is a great time for buyers.
