Hello all.
My 2001 Ford KA has done just under 90,000 miles and has been quoted £600 to repair.
The reasons for refusal of a test certificate
001 Front windscreen wiper does not clear the windscreen effectively (8.2.2)
002 Nearside front windscreen washer provides insufficient washer liquid (8.2.3)
003 offside front tyre tread depth below requirements of 1.6mm (4.1.e.1)
004 Nearside rear position lamp not working (1.1.a.3b)
005 offside rear stop lamp not working (1.2.1b)
006 nearside front brake hose excessively deteriorated (3.6.b.4d)
007 offside front brake hose excessivel deteriorated (3.6.b.4d)
008 nearside front macpherson strut has excessive movement in the upper support bearing assembly (2.5.b.1b)
009 offside front suspension arm has excessive play in pin/bush (2.4.g.2)
Advisory Items
015 Rear bumper insecure *dangerous*
Does £600 sound right for this? (Im not sure if that £600 includes the bumper!). I do not know much about cars at all. Im intending on calling a few garages tomorrow to get other quotes.

001 Front windscreen wiper does not clear the windscreen effectively (8.2.2)

003 offside front tyre tread depth below requirements of 1.6mm (4.1.e.1)
new tyre required £50 approx depending on size and quality

bulb needed £1
005 offside rear stop lamp not working (1.2.1b)
bulb needed £1

007 offside front brake hose excessivel deteriorated (3.6.b.4d)
as above
008 nearside front macpherson strut has excessive movement in the upper support bearing assembly (2.5.b.1b)

009 offside front suspension arm has excessive play in pin/bush (2.4.g.2)
not sure on price
get a breakdown of the £600 to see what they are charging for each. You could probably sort the first 5 out yourself easily enough0 -
Seems excessive to me..
1.4.5 can be done by you.
3. should be about £40-£50 depending on the tyre profile.
6.7 if this is rusting brake pipes then they may not necessarily need replacing. I had some corrosion on brake pipes a few years ago and the tester just got a scratch pad, some lubricant and cleaned 'em up there and then.
The rest don't seem like particularly strenuous jobs to be honest.
I'm betting the garage doing the MOT are also the garage wanting to perform the repairs?0 -
if the brake pipes are just corroded a bit then as said give them a good clean off and cover in grease0

For a business student, you should be able to research the cost of things like light bulbs and screenwash!
Sure the brake lines will need someone to sort them along with the tyre but the rest is DIY territory. If you can change a light bulb in your home you can change one in a car.
At the most, this should cost you £200 to put right - at the most.0 -
For a completely unbiased mot take your car to your local council's mot testing bayYou may click thanks if you found my advice useful0

For £600 you could buy this (plucked at random from autotrader) It's newer, same milage, and has 1 years MOT on it.
I agree with others though £600 repairs is excessive.0 -
Since they state hoses I think they mean the rubber flexi hoses which will need replacing as likly to be cracked/perishing. Still not a biggy though. Approx £23 each on euro parts for 2001 model perhaps cheaper if your search around. If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you! :dance:0

Would this be a main dealer perchance?
My garage would never put things down like bulbs/wipers, they'd just swap em out and charge me later - though I don't think they ever charged me for bulbs.0 -
I have been using the same garage for 5 years, however this year I decided to use another garage who have quoted me this £600. Thanks everyone for your help.0

If the brake lines need changing, and the strut needs replacing a large chunk of the £600 will be these parts and labour.
Take it to another garage, ideally council if you want a second opinion. Or ring round for quotes.0
