My grandfather is 85- has bad asthma, can't walk anywhere without a stick and can't even bend over properly.
My aunt has brought him a dog for Christmas. How the HELL is he supposed to look after it properly? Not to mention what reputable owner would let their dog go to someone who can barely look after himself never mind an animal.
Somebody tell me this is a really bad idea...

It's a really, really, REALLY bad idea.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
From what you've written its an incredibly stupid idea, but part of me just has to ask what is the age of the dog she has got him, and what breed ... Only asking because i'm wondering if its an even more stupid idea than i'm imagining already!!Some days I wake up Grumpy ... Other days I let him lie in.0

What a terrible thing to buy an old gentleman such as you describe!
The woman has the sense of a gnat!
I do hope she is moving in to look after it!0 -
What a stupid woman to buy a dog for this old gentleman ....and what a greedy breeder to sell a dog to this woman - and if she didn't buy it from a breeder, but has taken on a rescue dog - what an absolutely irresponsible rescue centre!0

In the politest way I can think of saying....
Your aunt is a complete pillock!! No forward thought, maybe her intention (and this is me being kind) was it would get your granddad out and socialising, and give him a reason to be. He is not going to manage that, and will only fill him with guilt.
A dog can live to 15+ years.
My heart weeps at the dumbed down attitude of the folk of today that think a dog is like an ornament, they are blummin' hard work and a major commitment.
Give me strength!!
PS. You may cut and paste my comments into her Christmas card.0 -
I'm glad im not the only one who thinks so- Mum can't see my point and won't even have anything to do with it though.
Would it be really wrong of me to ring the RSPCA when he gets and say to them I don't think he can look after it properly? As I think that will be the only way....:(0 -

Mum said it is an older dog so obviously not as energetic- but the fact that he can't even bend over to pick up his muck is enough- what is he supposed to do? Leave it on the sidewalk for someone else to deal with- illegal for starters.
I just have images of walking in there in the New Year and finding a present or three behind the sofa :eek:0 -

He does get out once a day to visit my Nana in a nursing home- but its literally a walk that would take us 2 minutes and takes him nearly 10 minutes. So there is the issue of the dog being locked in the house for 2/3 hours a day.0 -
Beth, you seem to have your head screwed on with interest of both your Granddad and the Dog at heart.
Hope you manage to sort it to the benefit of both parties, without having a major family feud.
Good Luck.0 -

LOL:D
It's a shame your Mum isn't supporting you in this as she'd be likely to have more clout with your Aunt.
All I can suggest is that you have a strong word with her and in all seriousness, print these comments out and pass them onto her.0
