The people who sell these things should be made to write this out a hundred times

  • Mine does, Mr Rhubarb. I know this because I run it off the mains. When it's plugged in nicely, no mess in my front garden. When my DH or one of my sons leaves it unplugged after using the socket for something else, the mess returns. If I spot mess in my front garden, I can guarantee someone has left the thing unplugged. Thankfully, the men are easy to train - with a trowel and strict instructions that THEY have to clear up the poo.

I think it really does depend which scarer you get. Mine was recommended by a friend. They had a dreadful problem in their street and in the end found the one she recommended to me was the one that worked best. It's expensive to run on batteries, though, but the wire to run it from the mains is thin enough for me to run it through the window and shut the window on it. (like the old doorbell wire)

I've not found the answer yet, but I have concluded that if the electronic ones do not work, then I am effectively left without a solution.

I have used the battery ones bought from the local DIY sheds, with limited but not total success. Usually when it fails it is because the battery has gone flat yet again, but it is certainly not always the case. It seems that some cats will tolerate the noise long enough to still be a problem. But in any case, even though this is a money SAVING forum, I think some times it is better to pay the extra and go for one of the mains driven ones from the start. Otherwise you may find yourself buying twice.

The thing is that almost all other suggestions leave the victim having to remember to top up whatever it is they are trying, on a regular basis. Be that pepperdust, or chemical jelly, or lion poo or mothballs or cleaning fluids or whatever. Surely we all want a 'set & leave' solution. (And one where one doesn't have to actually spot the cat sneaking in at some unGodly hour of the morning in order to do something oneself.) I know I do.

Of course I suspect that probably the best solution is to tar & feather the inconsiderate owners until they realise that they need to train their pet to go in their own back yard. :D

My problem is a variation on a theme, in that cats keep sitting on my car bonnet, leaving pawprints, hair and worst of all, scratches on my new car

Any ideas how to keep the blighters off? I've toyed with the idea of connecting the bonnet to the car battery, but is this legal/ safe / would I be able to start the car in the morning...!?

    Help!
  • I use cocoa shells as a mulch in my flower beds. Cats just hate to walk on it. It's about £1 per bag more expensive than bark but well worth it. Lay it 2" thick and water to prevent it blowing away. It will form a sticky mat.

Beware, it is poisonous to dogs for the first 3 weeks.
  • Well I have two cats & one in particular is way to fond of walking all over my car, it looks an absolute state & the other use my veg patch to get over to the next garden.

I've thought about one of those sonic repellers but I don't think you can adjust the range can you? I was going to put one on the wall by my car but it will be set off be everybody that walks past won't it?

I've also been looking for a solution to another problem with my G/Shepherd who tramples my flower beds when he goes on guard duty. As soon as somebody walks past he flies up over the beds & destroys everything in his path!

So you see even us cat/dog owners have problems.

Anyone heard of 2litre pop bottles filled with water and left on the lawn/garden someone said it worked for them. If it doesn't just pick the bottle up and throw the bl---y thing at the pest. :rotfl:
The solving of a problem lies in finding the solvers.
  • There are a few cats that keep hanging around our pond and last night one of the lil ***** killed our sturgeon :(

What is the best thing to keep them away, i'm thinking electric fence and to be honest i'd love to see the thing get a big shock from it. It's caused us nothing but trouble, it beats our cat up, urinates up everything and now killed a very expensive and much loved sturgeon :(
Just under £20,000 in debt and struggling!!

I have had a problem with cats using my garden as a toilet for about 20 years.

UNTIL....... about a month ago. Now they have Gone. ALL GONE!!!

I bought a motion sensitive water repellent that sprays an arc of water for 5 seconds scaring the blighters away. It connects up to your hose and uses batteries - it is brilliant. :jThis gizmo is about £30 from B&Q

and really is the best thing since Sliced Cats!!
  • what a coincidence ...my MIL purchased one of the sensor sonic one yesterday and we had to buy her batteries for it today!! Hubby went to fit batteries, pressed the test button and heard an audible sound so thought great its working. He and her then set it up in garden switched it on and were devastated that nothing happened when he swished his hand in front of the sensor. I couldn't stop laughing when he told me how indignant MIL was that she had paid so much money for it and now it wasn't working. He failed to see the funny side until I explained that it emits a sound at a pitch that neither he (1/2 deaf in one ear) or her (aged 80) are likely to be able to hear. The test sound would be pointless if it was the same pitch as the cat 'siren'. Not rushing off to tell MIL though, leave her to fume for a few more days ...tee hee
