  • It's interesting to read the opposing views here. My neighbour has 2 of them and i can't hear them but i have 2 sons under the age of 4 and you've got me worried now! If you do a google search you'll find loads of companies like this www.primrose-london.co.uk/cat_repeller.php advertising them for sale - there seem to be different makes at different prices - shop around for the best deal. Or you could probably get them cheaper on ebay. I think garden centres have them in stock now if you can't wait for the post man to deliver.

As I started this thread off, thought you might like an up-date.
    It appears to work!
Having directed the thing at the offender, I aimed, with it in silent mode, and I saw an immediate recognition, it then sped off.
The following day I saw the same animal, went outside, and there was this "oh, here he comes again" recognition and off it went.

  • I'm writing this for anyone like us who has only just discovered this site and has their neighbour's cats using their garden as a toilet. I have to write because the gravel thing is untrue. Most of the garden of the house we rent is covered in gravel. It hasn't stopped the neighbour's 3 cats from using it as their personal convenience. Having children this does not impress me. And all our love of cats has sharply gone by the wayside. So, gravel is not the answer; if it was, we would be blissfully happy and still loving cats. I will be trying the gel if my squirting doesn't work. Thanks to everyone who posted suggestions as no one we know has managed to come up with anything that wouldn't involve being arrested.lol!
  • Try this product from Amazon. The reviews rave about it, and if you read down them one guy even suggests backing it up by peeing in the area that gets fouled! i'm going to get one to see if it works as well as they all say.

  • We have had the same problem since we moved here almost 8 years ago!

We have tried all sorts of stuff. Part of the front garden that was especially a problem and very smelly we got rid of the grass and put stone chippings. This is what we do in the rest of the garden after trying everything else. In the beds we now buy green coloured sticks from the garden centre and stick them into the earth between plants so that the cats don't have anywhere to sit. It doesn't look too bad especially in the summer. We also try to keep the ground damp, they don't seem to like that. We shoo them away whenever we see them so they know they are not welcome and we go around the garden regularly with a plastic bag to pick up the deposits. If we leave it, it seems to multiply!

It's a lot of work but the only way our family can feel safe in and enjoy our garden.

I guess cat owners don't realise what a problem it is, if they did they wouldn't have 3 or 4 cats per household in a residential area.

    Good Luck.

What's always bothered me with these things (sonic repellants) is if you can't hear them how do you know they are doing anything at all and more to the point how do you know if its broken

Snake oil comes to mind

After trying everything else I got one of these and I have to say it has cleared up the problem by at least 90%. It differs from the other ones as it has a sensor so the noise is only triggered by movement in its range. I can hear it (there is a test button that makes the sound audible so you can check it anyway) but my husband and neighbours can't:confused:

Now I just move it around every few weeks when one persistent cat comes back:mad: and then it disappears again.
  • The catwatch has a light which comes on when it's working. It's true that you will be able to hear it when you're close to it but if I'm working in the garden I move it out of range (this saves on batteries as well). The catwatch works on our local cats but is pricey at around £50. It's been tested by the RSPB and they also reccomend it.
  • I have used sonic pest controllers with varied success (I probably need to change the batteries! ;)). If you go on ebay you can find catwatch and other products relatively cheap.
  • I have had one of the cat repellers for about 18 months now and have had no mess since. There are several cats in my area and one sits on my bird table (aaaargh!!!) or the roof of my shed. Don't really want them there but as long as they are not leaving their calling card I can put up with it. My son can hear the noise it makes really bad but then again he's 18 and not likely to go in garden much (that's where the dustbins are and he thinks that the fairies deal with that!!!!!) so it won't bother him too much. Just bought one for father-in-law as he chucks old batteries towards them in his garden, maybe we will spoil his fun now if they don't come.
