PAYG prices

My wife & I only use our phones to make or receive calls & texts. Yes, I know we are old fogeys, but that's all we need.
So can anyone advise who gives the cheapest deal on PAYG or are they all about the same. HI is on Virgin and I'm with o2 at present. We do not want inclusive monthly price either. Thanks.

How many calls and texts do you need per month? Potentially, Ovivo is free once you've bought the SIM card. They run on Vodafone's network.

Ovivo give you 100 minutes, 100 texts (and 300 Mb) free each month.

And you also get unlimited calls and texts between phones on the Ovivo network.

To use Ovivo, you'll need a smartphone. It's potentially completely free because it is based on them being able to play you adverts on your phone. Similar models have eventually gone bust but they might manage to make it work. Certainly no harm in enjoying it whilst it's around.

Non-smartphone options would include
White Mobile - 3p/min landlines 6p/min mobiles 5p/text
Straight forward no frills PAYG service. Credit does not expire but you must use the phone at least once every 45 days.

or a £1/month contract from Vectone that comes with a mix and match allowance of the first 50 minutes or texts being inclusive.

I think it isn't the case anymore.

Ovivo Mobile now supports all mobile devices as long as they are unlocked and can be used with any network’s SIM card.

I'm using Ovivo on a £10 Nokia 100 with no problems. It's used as a spare phone so I don't use it that much.

I'm quite happy to receive their occasional promotional emails as I appreciate they need to have a means of making a profit.

Try Giffgaff which runs on the O2 network but is a lot cheaper and your O2 phone would not need to be unlocked. Some people criticise O2 for it's 3g performance (not me) but for calls and text it is easily the best network for coverage.

Giffgaff is pretty expensive compared with many other virtual networks.

Ovivo is free.

White Mobile has call and texts rates which are around half the price of giffgaff.

Talk Home Mobile gives a massive amount of free minutes whenever you topup by £5

Don't know much about Vectone, but also sounds good for light users.

Most phones (other than iphones) can be unlocked for free or pay £5on ebay, so worth unlocking to use a cheap network.

Does Ovivo not pester you with adverts ? Also Giffgaff has turned out to be cheaper than free for me ( they have paid me back more than I have spent )

No

There are adverts on the Ovivo website.

You get emails with "special offers", but if you don't want them you can filter them to the bin or simply unsubscribe from them.

the adverts are returning from around april 2013....the thing about Ovivo that I didn't realise is your £10 initial topup doesn't start to get used until your monthly allowance has been spent so if you don't use up all your minutes etc your £10 is still there on top of your monthly allowance....I believe you have to use it or lose it with 12 months
