I want a new LCD/PLASMA Tv - Advice needed

Options
We are wanting to buy a new television for our sitting room

We have a budegt of £1100 and would like the following:

47-50" in Size
LCD or Plasma - We are not 100% sure of the difference
Must have atleast 2 scart leads
Must be HD ready
In silver would be ideal

Does anyone have any thoughts or advice for us, I know we are maybe expecting a little too much for our money

Oh it would be a added bonus if we bought it via Currys as we have a voucher for £129 to use

Thanks

I would also go for LCD. I also am not too sure what the difference is. Ecept for that fact that I have a 42 inch plasma and I would never ever buy one again.

We bought it just over 2 years ago reduced in a sale to £1000. We have had many various problems. One being when you change channels the number sticks on the screen, when changing from one particular channel (5) to BBC2 there is no sound so you have to go back to another channel and then reselect BBC2 (this might be more down to the TV than it being plasma) but the other thing is is to do with it being plasma is that the green goes green when it feels like it. We had it in to be repaired but because the problems happen whenever it feels like it they says they don't know what's wrong with it.

We it goes completey we are going to look at LCD.

Please bare in mind that a screen of that size needs a good source (I.e Sky ect) the bigger you go the more artifacts you will see, channels such as UKGold ect will not look great because high compression and low bandwith.

If you watch a lot of Sports than SkyHD would be ideal.

That sort of Price you could get the 47" LCD at Aldi which is not a bad panel, other branded makes you'll need to spent a bit more really.

Or The LG 50PC1DA which is not a bad Plasma for the price, or a Panasonic 50PX60 if you can fine one everywhere.

Don't forget to get an Upscaling DVD Player for standard DVDs (£50 Phillips is what i use) or if budget allowes HD, Blueray or PS3, Xbox 360 would be ideal.

I have a LG 42" LCD, I also have Sky HD and HD picture looks amazing, better than HD image on Plasma IMO, but standard viewing looks better on a Plasma rather than LCD when you got above 42" IMO

P.S I work at Currys whilst i study, and you can bargain with them over the price usually, theres good margins in TV's. Also ask what sort of Price they'll do for you if you take the MONTHLY extended warranty, they will take money off guaranteed, then soon as you out the store ring your bank and cancel the direct debit as theres no contract length with the monthly cover, also leave the vochers till they ask how you want to pay right at the end after you have your deal!

Plasma's have moved on now so much in 2 years, retention (what you have) is nearly a thing of the past, so as long as you don't leave BBC News 24 on for hours Logos will not burn in screen or cause retention.

For that size it will be plasma, LCD's dont get that big at the mo, I think samsungs 42" is the bigest I've seen.
One thing to remmber is that not all plasma/lcds are made the same, you will notice the diffrence betwen a 700 quid goodmans and a 1k sony.
I would recomend the new panisonic px70 sireies of screens.
But your going to struggle with a 47-50" for 1k

    Have a look here
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=429975 for some recomendations and here for general details on picking lcd Vs plasma.

There are only 2 makers of the panels in LCD TV's, LG\Philips & Sony\Samsung, but the imagae processing is what makes the different in price and the quality of the image (along with the source)

You can get LCD's up to silly sizes, but also silly prices, 47" is maximum at realistic prices.

Plasma is a whole different games, lots of different manufacturers of the panels and that why there are some really bad screens out there (Wharfdale 42" at Argos is a price example)

Personally at the size you want i would go Plasma unless you've getting HD or use the screen with a PC.
  • The rule at the moment is - over 42" get plasma under 42" get lcd.

Firstly thanks for this information, I worked with DSG aboy 6yrs ago and I know how much they are targeted each and every day. This TV that you are speaking about is one that me and the Mrs have been looking at for a few days now, we went to see the beauty in Curry's today and do like it.

With regards to other comments re watching the Tv, I have VM and I have a new dvd player to which I paid £220 for so I was hoping that this would do the job.

Thanks to everyone that taken the time to reply
