Does HD have to involve a LCD or Plasma? i dont think either look as good as a CRT
  • Apparently, Sony or one of the other big names have produceds a 108inch LCD tv which will be going on sale later in the year. It was promo'd at the CES show.

They are also making lcd tvs which are literally 8mm in depth!

    I want both.

Samsung offer an HD Ready CRT, Also Projectors can be HD Ready Too.

At 42" i would go plasma. screen burn isn't the issue it was (although you still need to be wary) and the picture at that size is better. Its usually considered that anything over 37" on LCD isn't that great.

For the money you've got you should be able to get a decent machine, either Samsung, Sony or LG. The only things to be aware of are that at the size you want, with the money you have you'll be hard pushed to get 1080p output. You'll still get an HD image but it'll most likely be 720p or 1080i.

Also make sure you get one with a high contrast ratio, at an absolute bare minimum aim for a ratio of 5000:1.

Plus if you get one with a freeview tuner make sure that it's a digital tuner and not analogue because otherwise the feature will be redundant when the analogue signal gets turned off over the next few years.

Finally, be aware that once you get over 46" in size plasma is more often than not the better option than LCD.

Just to add another vote for the >42 = plasma argument.

And...just to be patronising...You are aware that a 48-50" screen will be *really* big, aren't you (much, *much* bigger than it seems in the shop) - and you'll have to sit *really* far away from it to have a decent picture. We had a 37" screen briefly, but had to switch it for a 32, our lounge just isn't big enough...

Also, you would get a lot better picture for your money around the 42" mark...
And, finally, make sure to budget for your sound system if you haven't already - most of these big screens have really poor sound...

Argos had one for 700 i think it was RRP 1400 that i thought lookd a bargain but i asked some folk who literally laughed in my face .

Saying that i think CRT looks best i could care less how much space it takes.
