Any kind of surcharge for not paying by direct debit is a rip off and should be illegal. They can't go whacking people with a penalty because they choose to pay in a different manner to what suits their company. It's as simple as that. I think Martin should get on the case!

Exactly, why should you be charged for paying bill on time even when using pure old cash.

Why not make them lose even more and also save yourself some money.

At least BT offer alternative payment options.Where as the suppliers mentioned by Heinz in his excelent cost cutting post apart from Euphony all want d/d or cca. Plus of course BT do allow you to cps your calls, and offer cheap caller display, where as i dont see other suppliers rushing to do this.

So what? Big deal! It's not like it's something ingenious. Most utilities companies offer alternative payment options. There should be no charges for paying them the money they're ripping off you!

Not without charging you for the privilege.

Yes with others you have to pay online or direct debit but why should we have to pay more for paying on time, BT do charge you if you pay late, is that not enough?

So to avoid paying BT extra you have to go direct debit, so why not go direct debit to another provider who's call rate is cheaper.

I am not saying move your line rental from BT, keep option 1 but divert all calls to cheaper providers.

The point was many of the other phone providers won't accept a customer unless they pay by direct debit, there is no choice, if the direct debit fails and you have to pay them by cheque they charge you around £4 extra.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

So your happy to pay cheaper call suppliers by d/d, but you object to paying BT by d/d for the line you use to make the cheaper calls.:D

No I was happy for people to get a discount for paying by direct debit.

I object to that being removed and now being charged for not using direct debit.

Yes I know the amount is not much different but a charge is a charge and not a discount, I used to pay using online banking and you can't tell me it costs much more than direct debit.

Yes people can and do take what the corporates throw at them but I don't, I like to make a stand even if it's so small it won't make a difference.

But I bet if 50% of BT customers did what I am doing and followed Heinz advice the impact would be seen and BT would suffer and the customer would have a victory.

I know myself I am going to cost them at least £20 a month, times that by 50% of customers we would be talking a lot of money. And once you lose a customer it's costly and very hard to get them back.

When I contacted the CEO (Ben Verwaayen) I was told it was a corporate decision and I replied I can make a customer decision and move my calls away.

I am only talking about the calls not the BT line, so make sure you keep the BT option 1.

I am also setting up VOIP so some of my future calls will be even cheaper than the Heinz advice.

Anyway I will not be so angry next month when my BT bill will be like a ASDA roll back to the 1970's.

But your decision of who you make calls with isn't based on whether BT charges extra for DD. Or to put it another way, if BT didn't charge you extra for non-DD payment, would you really make your calls through BT?
