if you decide on the S3 (nice phone!) you could consider a tough case for it?
Something like an
Otterbox http://www.otterbox.com/samsung-galaxy-s3-cases/samsung-galaxy-s3-cases,default,sc.html
Case mate phoantom http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/case-mate-phantom-case-for-samsung-galaxy-s3-black-white-p35819.htm
Go Ballistic http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/go-ballistic-sg-maxx-series-case-for-samsung-galaxy-s3-black-p35504.htm
that way you have the best of both worlds, nice slim sleek phone for when not working0 -
Problem is a case just makes an already large phone even bigger lol.0

thanks for the suggestions

as usual, when it comes to new phone time, my head is just spinning! i rang t-mobile earlier to see what upgrades were available & it's just the plans as shown on the website. i was expecting a 'deal' of some sort, how silly of me!
last night i thought i'd narrowed it down to an iphone 4s 16gb for him & a galaxy s3 mini for me. t-mobile don't have the s3 mini now, perhaps in January, so that plan is out the window at the moment.
i'm also unsure if an iphone will be suitable for him as i know very little about them. his son has the 4s & we've checked it connects to the hands free/sat nav in the works van ok. just worried about the amount of connection/lost calls feedback i've read & poor battery life? also how tied-in to apple software you are, but perhaps that's my lack of knowledge just making me wary. son appears to be an iphone fan "it's brilliant, would really suit dad as it's so simple" !
my 2nd choice is the nokia lumia 820 which gets some really good reviews, but i did really want the s3 mini. i don't need all singing, all dancing & the scaled down version of the big boy s3 seemed just right.
the iphone was actually offered at only £19 each (shows at £103 on the website currently) on the plan i want, which surprised me as i thought it would be more, suppose they're shifting old stock? financially, it would make sense to just go with 2 of them as the lumia 820 would be £120 & no doubt the s3 mini won't be free. for some reason i just can't bring myself to go for an iphone, i'm just not a fan, but i can't really explain why. perhaps it's all those fuzzy photo's on facebook that appear all the time?!
i'm trying to get some recommendations for business dealers/re-sellers who seem to have the s3 mini available on t-mobile already, or i might just wait until new year as i'm pipped off with spending so much time on it already

But are you going up n down ladders, lugging lumps of wood about or clambering in & out of a big van? I think an s3 would survive with me but not the workman of the house.
As an S3 owner i would not contemplate the above scenario and would be using cheap throw away job for that sort of work .

I work for a building company and am on site most days up and down ladders ect and ive had the s3 since it came out and not a problem. In my eyes its much better the the iphone (cue abuse lol)0

Samsung have not long launched this. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
It's for the many and not the few. Be sure it's out there looking for you.
In every town, in every state. In every house and every gate.
Wth every precious smile you make. And every act of kindness.
