While the OP is still being economical with facts so we don't know the point of origin of the flight, whenever I book a flight with a low cost carrier I am asked whether I want to include insurance, whether it's a one way flight or a return, so surely that could be an option.

    Thanks I'll look into it.

That depends on what sort of "cover" you are talking about. Emergency medicine is available to everyone that happens to be in the country - our ambulances dont wait for you to give a credit card before collecting you.

For routine or followup medicine then yes residency is the requirement.

Wow I didn't know that either. Thank you. I don't think it changes anything - can I just check where you get that info from - sorry to be a pain I had always assumed that if you paid your NI then you were covered.

(Although I do have worldwide medical cover anyway - sorry to those who think I'm hiding the truth - I just don't see how the truth has anything to do with it. To my mind either insurance companies offer what I want or they don't, I don't think my nationality, my mother's maiden name, the reason for my travel, whether I have won the lottery, or whether I am an axe murderer* actually effect anything.)

I must say I am rapidly going off MSE for the help lots of people give these days. It seems that there is very little by way of answering the question and lots of criticism. Then I guess that is the situation with any forum which has been around as long as MSE.

Please note, I am not knocking those who have been helpful. It was just a simple question and required a simple answer. Yes it is possible but you'll pay over the odds for it. No it is impossible. I don't know. If anyone here had been able to explain how the info I was not in the UK effected anything then perhaps it was material info, but instead people seem to jump to the conclusion it is. It makes no difference at all - either insurance companies offer the service or they don't. It is precisely for this reason that I don't give full background on every question. I wasn't looking for a quotation from a particular insurance company. I want to know whether any companies offer the service. It might be that I need to look in a different country because I can't get the cover from the UK, but that doesn't bother me. I ask in the UK because it is the country I know, and the people there speak the language I speak.

Despite what I said earlier (I was making assumptions that turned out false) they matter a HUGE deal.

To be frank, you will not get an answer (no matter what anyone insists) unless you state your nationality, the country of origin and the reason for your trip (not "to visit Bob in Canterbury and then Mary up in Edinburgh", but leisure/business/both).

It is not a case of "say whether insurance companies offer it or not" because no-one knows what you're asking for. As has already been pointed out, no UK insurer (that I'm aware of) would consider covering you - and unless you give more information, no-one can suggest one that does.

The fact that your journey was not starting in the UK is very relevant. UK insurers only provide cover for trips originating from the UK.

People weren't asking questions to be nosey, whatever you think, but to establish the facts to better advise you.
