It may be easier if you actually say what your doing where you are going etc?

By a one way trip do you mean you are emigrating? Are you staying with family/ friends and just dont know when your coming back or what?

As vague help based on the vague request then your home insurance MAY cover the items if you have Personal Possessions cover

They clearly said they are going on a holiday for more than 60 days.

And is where they are going really relevant? I assume it's not somewhere like North Korea or Syria, in which case it doesn't really matter does it - surely it would be the same regardless of destination?

Most people going on extended holidays dont buy just one way tickets and so I would argue it isnt clear what they are doing or why they dont want cover for either their time there or the return leg (which if its a holiday it will happen).

Where they go does make a difference. There are a few USA insurers that do extended holiday insurance at a reasonable price but due to US sanctions they wont provide cover in certain countries like Cuba which are popular with non-US citizens.

True but I didn't think it mattered. The trip is to the UK, but my departure flight leaves from outside the UK. I want my luggage insured for the flight, once I arrive in the UK I'll be staying in my own accommodation which already is insured and I've already paid my national insurance so I don't need any medical cover.

I must say I tend to agree with callum9999 above who pointed out that it shouldn't matter - it seemed a simple question - plus if you ask a simple question then the answer is more useful to other people in similar situations. I doubt there will be anyone in exactly the same situation as me ever. Sometimes I think people only ask out of being nosy - rather than because they actually would have anything useful to add once they find out the details. That said, I hope I've now given enough personal information to get an answer. Please don't take this paragraph as a criticism - I wasn't trying to have ago at anyone who was trying to be helpful (hence my thanks were already added yesterday).

most UK travel insurers will expect the journey to commence in the UK for cover. Your options would be to look at purchasing insurance from the country you are departing from to see if they will cover this situation or possibly one of the backpackers-type policies that will cover longer trips.
Although I agree that many policies will not cover valuables in checked baggage so, unless you can carry it in your and luggage and keep it with you any insurance may be worthless

    Exactly!

OP - you might have saved yourself quite a bit of unwanted advice and opinion and been provided with accurate advice if you had stated this rather vital piece of information in your first post!

That isn't the qualification for NHS medical cover in the UK - nor is citizenship.

What matters is being normally resident in the UK. That may or may not be true for you of course, but it is something they check up on rather more than they used to.

In which case I have to change my previous answer and we no longer agree! While I still think the destination wasn't particularly relevant, not mentioning that you aren't in the UK (considering this is a UK website...) is incredibly relevant!

I didn't consider Cuba etc. - good point. Serves me right for taking the OP at face-value I guess!

That depends on what sort of "cover" you are talking about. Emergency medicine is available to everyone that happens to be in the country - our ambulances dont wait for you to give a credit card before collecting you.

For routine or followup medicine then yes residency is the requirement.

While the OP is still being economical with facts so we don't know the point of origin of the flight, whenever I book a flight with a low cost carrier I am asked whether I want to include insurance, whether it's a one way flight or a return, so surely that could be an option.
