A friend has fitted winter tyres on steel rims, but 16" instead of the 17" factory fitted.

Will this cause any problems?

As long as they are the same overall size and offset etc it shouldn't cause any problems.

No, I mean that the outside diameter of the 16" tyre should be the same as the 17" tyre.

If you put the tyre details into this tool, it will tell you how close the sizes are...

Thanks. I've tried that in 2 different browsers and the new tyre size isn't changing.

Would have been handy last year when I couldn't get winter tyres my size for love nor money.

I tried two sizes

205 / 50 / 17
215 / 55 / 16

The tyre size on the right remained the same for both.

those tyres will be pretty close to each other, diameter is within 15mm which will give about 2.5% error on your speedo.

I am surprised that the winter tyres are wider, normally winters are the same width or narrower than summers
