    2Megapixels

Your explanation of the problem doesn't make much sense technically, internet key, it takes too much of their internet time etc, so it could come across as an excuse, or could affect whatever you buy.

Thanks, but I have no idea what this is- could she plug it into her laptop and it would use that rather than her hard drive? Sorry, to sound so stupid about these things, I really don't get techy things...I just wanna skype!!!

someone will suggest installing linux next, you don't need an ssd, and probably don't need a tablet;)

No ..But she doesn't need to dump an old laptop just because the HD is failing ..
I will assume the Linux comment was sarcasm and respectfully tell you it adds nothing to the thread ..

neither did buy an ssd, you are just confusing things.

there is nothing to suggest the hd is failing, and if it were, a new hard disk is far cheaper than an ssd, but they don't appear to have time or the inclination to fix it anyway

    Marbet ..
My advice would be to ask to offer to help her pay to have the laptop repaired.
She already has 90% of everything she needs to speak with you ..fixing that would in my opinion be the best way forward.
Any new hard drive installed carefully at a decent repair shop will be the cheapest option ..An SSD is just a very fast hard drive ..but a straight replacement of the type she has removed will get you back being able to chat on skype.
    I would try that ..

Thanks for that. I'm not sure she would accept me helping to pay for the repair, but I can try. I was hoping just to send them something that would do the job, so she can't refuse it!!!
I guess its less straightforward being in Italy, I think it's more expensive to get things repaired there.
I miss her sooo much, and since we've started skyping, talking on the phone, just isn't the same!!
    Thanks for your help.x
