Just got a letter that I contravened a red traffic light, which I don't remember doing... I was mortified, but then I noticed that my recorded speed at this time was 0 mph. Am confused as to me this implies that I stopped at the lights. Is this a mistake on their part?

might be your wheels are just over the line?0 -
Is it possible that you stopped on the white line or edged over it while you were waiting for the lights to change?
Seems the only possible reason why your speed would register as 0mph.
Have you asked for a copy of the photo?
Hope this helps

No.

I have no doubt it was me, I don't remember my exact positioning where I stopped, I don't think any different from where I normally stop, I've been driving for 17 years and it's never been a problem before, I can't say 100% sure I wasn't over a line, but I don't think so. Can I ask for a pic, without it going to court? If I did it, I'll accept a fine, but I have no recollection of doing so and like I say, speed of zero makes me question whether there's not some error, it certainly doesn't look like dangerous driving to me if I just nosed out onto a line, though like I say, I don't think I did.0

That's why you haven't been niped for dangerous.
You can ask for a photo to help id the driver but they don't have to provide any evidence until you enter a not guilty plea.
It is an offence for any part of the car to pass the stop line on red. Did you not notice the flash?0 -
I didn't notice a flash. Am totally baffled. Theoretically it is possible that I committed the offence unknowingly I guess..0

Ask for a photo then.
Be mindful you have 28 days to respond else you risk 6 points and a fine in the region of £500. That's if section 172 is mentioned on your letter.0 -
Ultimately, I know I'll cough up, grudgingly but without argument. I just wish I understood what had happened. Just consider it as a cost of driving.0
