Receiving really nasty phone calls and just accused the wrong person

Hi.

I feel dreadful.

For the past two weeks we have been receiving really horrible phone calls very late at night (1 or 2am). These calls have been made by two people and range from threatening to break our windows, assault us, accusing me of having an affair, describing what this person has been doing to me to offering to sell us drugs and accusing us of selling drugs.

The calls are very personal, calling us by name and describing our house and where we live. We are ex-directory and so the calls have been made by someone who knows us.

I got it into my head that I knew who one of the callers was (based on accent) and spoke to him tonight. The poor guy was really shocked an denied all knowledge. I believe him.

Now I feel deadful. I apologised to this person and he was really nice (which makes me feel worse).

I don't know what to do now. My DH says I have apologised and to leave it there but I feel horrible.

I also feel victimised by the calls. My husband doesn't believe them but I am afraid it will plant a seed of doubt. (For the record I have never even looked at another man in the 15 years we have be together.)

Any suggestions to make me feel better?

  • have you contacted the police? or the BT support service - get your number changed etc (assuming its your landline)

Of course he's going to deny it.. He's hardly going to say oh yes I'm the nutter that's raining you at night

It will be interesting if they stop now

Definitely contact your phone supplier - they must have a nuisance calls procedure. Also it is worth contacting the police on 101.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.
  • Hi

We have contacted BT. We really dont want to change the number. After the last lot of graphic messages (they leave messages on the answering machine) we have decided that one more call and we will go to the police. I feel a bit silly reporting them but I dont know what else to do.

Did you base your suspicions on who was making these calls solely on the accent? Or did you think it was this guy you accused because you know him well and what he can be capable of?

I wouldn't feel too guilty yet. It will be very interesting to see if these calls stop now. What you have described suffering boils down to harrasement. Anyone you accused of doing this to you is highly unlikely to admit to it.

Can your landline or mobile phone company trace where the call is coming from? Can you set something up on your phone so that you can see who is calling you and only answer to those you wish to speak to?
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.
  • I know I accused the wrong person. You cant fake that reaction.

Is 101 the new non-serious reporting number? I dont think we have that in Scotland yet.
  • I was absolutely shocked when I thought this guy had made these calls as he seems really nice and no-one has ever had a bad word to say about him.

The callers leave a message if we dont answer. There is a way of blocking up to 10 numbers via BT for a monthly charge but I have to answer the call to do this. I think this is the next step though.

Just feeling very overwhelmed and sad about it all.

Can you go to a police station?
  • The nearest manned police station is about half an hour drive away. I dont feel unsafe as I would imagine they are just out to make trouble and wouldn't carry out their threats, its just the effect it is having on me emotionally
  • Contact your phone provider and get with held numbers blocked.
