I'm dying to help the OP. I'm dying to be co-operative, supportive and helpful.Dirk_Gently wrote: »Just as an aside, sometimes when I visit this site I'm quite astounded by how rude, uncooperative, smug and patronising some people can be.....
Somebody else has asked for the key information needed for others to assist.
This request has been completely blanked.
It makes it somewhat difficult to assist.0 -

And this is the only post in this thread that is not either giving something, or asking for more info, to be able to provide further info...
So using your superpowers just how much was the Cheque for, what exchange rate was used & how much did he get.....
Should HSBC have simply said
"Oh its OK... You think you gave the right answers... Clearly we have them wrong... Now what would you like to do Mr Fraudster"..... :rotfl:Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -

Opinions4u. Thank you for being of some constructive help.
In essence I have checked exchange rate at time of transaction, taken off their fee and am still left with a shortfall of around £100. I know my maths are right, I have checked, double checked and triple checked and after all things are taken into account I'm still short on cash.
Suppose the real thing here is, how do I make sure THEIR error doesn't cost ME anything!?0 -
To re-iterate opinions4u questions
1. The cheque value is $x,xxx
2. The exchange rate applied is $1 = £0.yy (or £1 =$1.yy)
3. The fee deducted is £zz
4. The amount credited is £v,vvv
Provide the above else no-one can advise anything.
Which exchange rate are you using for the conversion? The one the bank has applied or an external source?0 -

You being so evasive about it implies that you don't know you are right - otherwise you could have just posted it and wouldn't have a list of people continuously asking what the details were...
Though as you're so sure you are right, OBVIOUSLY you just point out why you are right to HSBC (either via telephone or in branch) and they will refund you the money. I'm confused how you could possibly think there is any other option to resolve this?0 -
Hi,
I would advise you to go to your local branch and ask for a statement. It should show the USD deposit and the rate and fee that has been applied. Then you can show them in black and white that the figures dont add up.
Otherwise you may keep going around in circles with these call centres! It is a nightmare to cash USD cheques in the UK as the banks take several weeks to process them and the rates and fees are usually pretty bad, and worst of all you dont know what the rate is until after the transaction has been done!
If you plan to receive any further usd payments, you should try to encourage the person/company to pay by USD wire, and then use an international money transfer company to convert it into sterling for you (they can accept the USD into their usd client account),that way, you will get a better rate, and will know what the rate is before it is converted to GBP, it could all be done in 48 hours.0 -

When you say date of transaction. What date do you mean?
Date you paid the cheque in...
Date it debited your account....
Also where are you getting the exchange rate figures from.
Calling into a branch is something you are going to have to do to get your banking reset anyway. So asking at the same time will get someone to explain how they have worked it out as well. Or of they can't get you through to someone who can.Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -
Yummymoney - your first post suggests the bank are being evasive - POT KETTLE BLACK !!!
Why don't you want to post the figures here?
It is quite simple for us to check the exchange rate offered for a particular day - its not a state secret LOL0
