HSBC Charges

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help please? I recently paid in a cheque in Dollars however after their (very expensive) fee and exchange rate there is a shortfall of around £100.

I tried to phone them but I couldn't pass their rigorous security checks despite to the best of my knowledge answering all questions correctly. They wouldn't tell me what I had got wrong either??? Ok, give them benefit of the doubt...

The bottom line is, I am not sure over the best way to proceed as they seem to be VERY evasive.

Would be grateful for any advice.

    Call into a branch with proof of ID. Photo driving licence or passport etc. And get them to explain.

    They're not being 'evasive' about it though are they? You just didn't pass security and your pass number is locked.
  • I don't know why I didn't pass their security test, I know I answered all questions correctly as I am who I claimed but they told me they couldn't say which question I got wrong.

    That is pretty irrelevant to be honest, the point is, after the exchange rate at that point and their fee I am still about £100 down on what should be in my bank account. Question I have is how do i make sure I get the amount that should of been paid to me?

    As Jones says, it's a case of how much the cheque actually was.

    If it's a £50k cheque, it's a lot different to a £500 cheque. Whenever I've done it, it's always worked out at around 4%.

    Based on what? You've been asked to provide the figures but haven't done so.

    You do this:

    1. The cheque value is $x,xxx

    2. The exchange rate applied is $1 = £0.yy (or £1 =$1.yy)

    3. The fee deducted is £zz

    4. The amount credited is £v,vvv

    Then others will confirm the calculations and identify any issue.

    More than likely you're £100 down because the exchange rate you've got in your head is different to the one used. But as it stands you've asked a forum to help and provided them with nothing more than fog and knitting needles to come up with an answer for you.

    Alternatively, if you don't want to provide cold hard facts, complain to the bank. They might come up with the radical response of checking the figures and explaining them to you.

    As already stated, you need to go in with ID, reset your security and then ask them.

    Well clearly the answers you gave do not match waht they hold on their system....
    And no bank should tell you what questions you get right/wrong till you have cleared security....
    If they did it would be a joy for fraudsters to keep trying knowing which they had right & wrong.....

    Into branch with ID and problem solved.
    Failing that post the details requested.

    Also not exchange rate will be the date processed. Not the day you presented it in branch.
