They were told "open basic bank accounts or we will make you". Simple as.

That doesn't make it enshrined in law as the op had said. Banks get told to do many things, most of which they ignore when inconvenient/unprofitable.

However if you apply online your most likely to get a basic account. .

You can't apply for a basic account online. You apply for a bank account. If you fail the process you get a letter telling you to go into branch to set up a basic account.

it's 'BS' i have the current account and i don't pay in £500 a month i pay in £60 £300 sometimes even a tenner, they just say that on there website - they want the money, just advertising that's all it is' clever but it fails.

if you're under 25 this 'rule' doesn't apply to you, i had the HSBC account at 23 (now 25) still don't pay in £500.
    Eligibility requirements

Please ensure you can answer YES to the following questions.
    • Are you 18 years or over?
    • Will you be paying at least £500 per month into this account?
(If you don't make the £500 monthly payment required to maintain your account, we will either change it to a Current Account or give you notice that we will be closing your account. If you are under the age of 24, the qualification criteria will not apply.)

Note current account is the basic account and only has a cash card and not a visa debit card.....
    So it is not BS....

Or are you going to compensate Brallaqueen if HSBC stick to the info on their webiste.... Which clearly you think is rubbish....

  • The Lloyds link states that they will carry out standard credit checks when applying to open an account.
I assume Halifax and the Bank of Scotland will too as they are all part of the Lloyds Banking group.

Before you continue with your application, please make sure:

    • I do not have a current account with Halifax.
    • I am aged 16 or over.
    • I am a UK resident OR I have permission to stay in the UK for at least the next 12 months.

Please be aware that, like most banks, we will refer your details to a credit reference agency as part of the application process.
    So Halifax credit check...

Just because they refer the details to a credit reference agency as part of the application process. It does not mean they are doing a "credit check" they could be used just them to verify the applicants identity.
