Not eligible for the hsbc basic account?

It just means an unnecessary credit search when in essence they only want a basic bank account.
Given that HSBC told the OP he had a good credit history. Maybe already logged when they checked him out...
But I think people are getting way to hung up on credit checks etc.Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -

OP could have opened a no fee current account - all banks offer them not just basic ones.

I stand by what I said.An ID check I can understand but not a credit check.
IMO they credit score you and offer you the basic account as a last resort should you fail the credit score.
With its limitations I don't know of any reason why someone would want to open a basic account when other free accounts are available.0 -
Thank you everyone for your input. Just to clarify I do have online accounts but not with HSBC (smile and co-op) and they assumed I had a good credit history as I had these other accounts and a mortgage.
The current hsbc account requires 500 in income per month, as I want it to help budget for spends (~ 160 per month) I don't qualify.
The big plus for me is the coin machines, I live in a small town in the midlands so no other bank offers this facility. However, with the attitude of the salesman (he literally said 'you should try one of the smaller banks, they might suit you better') I kind of feel like I am not worth being their customer.Emergency savings: 4600

That's fine however if someone asks for a basic account regardless of their credit history they should get one. So seeing the op has no relationship with HSBC they should just say I want to open a basic account and be done with it.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -

The whole point of basic accounts is for people that can't get a standard account.
So why should they give one, when clearly it is not a need, only a request. When they have other products that are better suited.
Why coin counting machines?
Most people manage with manual counting. Unless they are something more than a casual customer.Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -

Also why should HSBC have to waste money on providing an account just so someone can use their coin machine and no more?urs sinserly,

Again, thank you everyone for your thoughts and input.
I just felt that the salesman was being very pushy on opening a current account which does not suit my needs at all and I wanted to check out his reasoning. As it turns out, he was not giving me the full picture so thank you to everyone who has commented about that.
I do understand that HSBC has no obligation to let me open an account of any type, especially if I am not going to be bringing in big bucks. That's fair, they can pick and choose their customers. I'm just a bit put out by the misdirection and the general attitude of the salesperson.dalesrider wrote: »

My mum hoards her change coins. She's almost blind and finds coins difficult so tends to use notes instead. A coin counting machine would be useful to me because it would be useful to her. Otherwise I'd just shrug and open an account with someone else.Emergency savings: 4600

I do this, too, as it's been an old Cabbies trick for ensuring there's enough change in the car at all times, and it's become habit. I've got about £800 of change in the centre console of my car because I can't be bothered to bag it up, and don't pay for parking etc. Why should it accumulate?
