the main nest is under the house, under my lounge, so I think this would be to dangerous, as I dont want to burn my house down, nice though to terminate them,

I have thought of getting one of those burner things that you burn weeds with and insinerating them when they are out, but they seem to be everywhere and my neighbours will think I've gone nuts,

or theres nippon ant killer thats a jelly. both take the poison back to the nest and kill the lot off. worth a look.

Well I can certainly vouch for this. I had a very big problem a few years back and used the nippon jelly. They love it! I spent ages watching the ants coming out and eating it and running back to the nest. I did not feel so pleased later when I left the house and noticed a long run of little black 'hills' along the drive. On closer inspection, I found they were neatly stacked mounds of dead ants.   There must have been thousands. In fact I felt sooo bad, I have never been able to repeat the excercise

    * I haven't tried this one and I suspect it's an Old Wives' Tale (can we still call them that in this day and age?). Ask a child if you can borrow a piece of chalk from them. Draw a line with chalk. Apparently they won't cross a chalk line. If that fails, at least you can have a game of hopscotch and stamp on the beggars as you're hopping.

Mum showed us this when we were kids and yes, it worked! The ants would run round in the circles looking for a way out! My sister did this one day and spent a good while watching the ant getting more frantic and frustrated. She obviously got bored though as she suddenly got up, stamped on it and ran off to play!

just an up-date on the ants or lack of, yipee, got some powder called doff ant killer, pet/child friendly, put it down and hey presto no more ants, or woodlice, I do feel abit embrassed thought, as my neighbour has now got them, I dont think the powder kills all of them I think they just move one garden down, a couple of years ago my neighbour 2 up the road had them last year my next door neighbour 1 up the road had them then I get them and just when I think its safe to go back into the garden my next door neighbour 1 down the road has said she now has them, coincidence I dont think so, I think they just move house/garden,

I know this won't get rid of them, i'd go with boiling water, but if they are getting in your house or you dont want them somewhere then - This sounds daft but works- draw a chalk line, for some reason ants won't cross it!!!

Ok this sounds totally mad I know but my OH loves ants. Don't ask me why I have no idea, but he has kept nests of them in the past so I asked him about it.

Basically he said getting rid of a nest is really really difficult. It doesn't matter how many ants you kill if you don't kill the queen they'll just pump out a load more to replace the ones you killed. Even if you do get the queen a colony will instantly begin to produce another queen to replace her and they can survive without one for something like a year. On top of this if you DO get rid of one colony any nearby colonies will take over their "space". Best thing to do seems to be just try to control their numbers but if they're not causing a major problem then leave them be. If they're coming in the kitchen or whatever it's to get food so make sure you don't leave anything for them to find as it'll attract them, especially sugary stuff. He said if you've got alot coming in you can try enticing them away from your house by putting food out for them and they should go to that instead. All you'd need to use is a little bottle top of honey or sugar water.

The only proper way to get rid of them seems to be to hire exterminators to come in and nuke the nest with chemicals. Oh and stamping on them or digging up nests will only attract more apparently as they release some kind of warning chemical so others turn up to defend.
