thanks that is what I have been doing after the powder didnt work, but they just seem to come back tenfold the year after, cuddlymarm wrote: »Hi
An animal friendly way to kill ants is by pouring boiling water over them and following them back to the nest and pouring boiling water down the hole. It doesn't get rid of all of them but it will get rid of quite a few and over time will deplete them. You have to do it regularly. (We did it every day for a fortnight last summer and it vastly improved the problem. We can't use any type of poison because the front yard is used by children and animals.)

thanks could be just what I need,Dustykitten wrote: »We have had a similar problem in the past.
I use Ant Stop! Bait station. It is a plastic disc thing with the chemicals inside and you just open the flaps - pets and kids can't get at it and it has completely cured our problem - touch wood. I have it just inside the kitchen door and on the kitchen window sill and it has stopped any invasions and we don't seem to have any outside now either

this is where they are coming from under the concrete, it was laid in 1966 by my late father and my late uncle les so I didnt want to have to dig it up for this reason, but might be an idea, although an expensive one, a friend of mine suggested laying some ornamental slabs on top and cermenting them in, but I dont know if this will sort the problem, as the main ant hill in under the house, and as of yet they dont seem to be able to get from under the house, although they get in through the open windows, but thanks anyway, cwget new concrete put down. Extra strong

I have posted on a previous thread but worth repeating here that ants dont like strong odours, pinetar, camphor or creosote boundaries will keep them away and you should add these to the boiling water when you find any of the nest holes.
Though difficult to find these days, quicklime will also help destroy the ants nest and natural barriers are wormwood, winter-green and ground ivy.0 -
I have the same problem with ants and flying ants. The local council advised not paying anyone who claims to be able to rid you of ants. Waste of money.
My brother suggests finding the run then pouring petrol down the hole.0 -

Torbrex is right about ants not liking strong odours. I don't know if any of these will be right for you since you have cats and dogs but here goes:
* when you see a troop of them anywhere, sprinkle talcum powder over them.
* to keep them off an area, go around the outside of the area and wet it with your watering can. Then put down a sprinkled line of either cinnamon, cayenne or chili pepper, black pepper and some whole cloves in the wet line.
* Mix your boiling water 50/50 with vinegar - and then see how the little blighters like it!
* I haven't tried this one and I suspect it's an Old Wives' Tale (can we still call them that in this day and age?). Ask a child if you can borrow a piece of chalk from them. Draw a line with chalk. Apparently they won't cross a chalk line. If that fails, at least you can have a game of hopscotch and stamp on the beggars as you're hopping.
