Computer will not connect to internet, even though says connected.

Options
Hi,

a family member has brought over their computer saying they could not connect to the internet with it, after testing another computer we know it was not the ISP.

Brought it over and cannot connect it here either. In networking its says the internet is connected and in device manager there is no issues with the ethernet adapter (built in)

Its running Windows XP.

I don't have a wireless dongle or a pci ethernet card to test to see if it is the ethernet port.

But surely that would bring something in device manager?

Any ideas what might be causing this?

many thanks

I have removed all anti virus installed (AVG) incase that was stopping it but still nothing. No other anti virus software is installed.

    start, run

    cmd

type ipconfig in the box that comes up and post results

check there are no proxy settings in IE, tools, internet options, connections/lan connections

    what firewall is in use

    whats the history

is the light on on the router port.

if the ipconfig result comes up with something beginning with 169

    type

    ipconfig /release

    then

    ipconfig /renew

    in the cmd prompt box

Ok typed in ipconfig and came up with the following.

    Windows IP Configuration

An internal error occurred: The system cannot find the file specified.

Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help.

Additional Information: Unable to query host name.

I did a search on google and some suggested to change the computer name in network settings (starting a new network) but after a reboot its still the same.

    run

    sfc /scannow

possibly corrupt networking tcpip or drivers for the the ethernet card, try deleting it from device manager, then re detecting

whats the history, has it had a reinstall recently

Had a reinstall about 2 months ago, just a clean wipe. Everything been working fine on it since then with no issues at all until last night.

Will try and delete the drive

    edit

Tried removing the ethernet drive and let windows reinstall it, no joy.

Also removed the Internet Portocol (TCP/IP) using windows enabler and reinstalling it but that also did not work.

I know it something on the PC as all cables, internet connections are working fine on others so bit of a mystery at the moment.

Are you using as wireless router, have you entered the Wep key into the other computer?

It is connected to my network via ethernet cable. This PC does not have wireless. It is not my end as my 2 laptops and other devices connect to it fine, it also did not work in my Uncle's house when other computers did too. So nothing to do with ISP etc.

I did see something when searching device manager under show all files.

IP NETWORK ADDRESS TRANSLATOR has a yellow box and code 24, quick google brought out a few things but nothing seems to fix it.
