Are AMEX credit cards harder to be accpted with, compared to others?

Options
When applyinng for American express credit cards, are these harder/stricter to apply for, to be accepted?

(as they are a top credit card company)

or would the criteria be almost similar to the rest of the cards, (credit check, credit score, etc)

Have you been accepted for an amex credit card ? and what was your credit score like ?

  • The process is the same and they consider the same data as other lenders.

The "challenge" is they really only market the upper end cards and above and so have no equiv of the standard cards that most other lenders do.

I have 2 AmEx cards, my credit rating is considered "good" (rather than excellent) but I have a couple of cards with reasonable limits (7.5k+), I have a good income which has been there for a few years etc. At the same time MBNA wont offer me any card, not even their sub prime one :)

For comparison I was accepted for an Amex Gold recently and although my credit rating is pretty good, it was credit search number 4 in 3 months, and I was expecting to get rejected on too many previous searches

what would be considered a good income for one to feel confident in applying for an AMEX card without the hesitence in thinking he/she will get rejected.
Total Debt in June 2013: Barclaycard 0% until Nov 2014: £1550

    Tesco CC: £1200 0% Until March 2014

HSBC CC: £384 25%APR - TARGET to make GREEN ASAP

It would be dependent on which card you went for. I have a couple with them, started with the basic Green Charge Card which I think needs a £10k salary, then moved to the Platinum Charge card (which I got when my salary was around £35 or £40k IIRC) about 20 months after my IVA completed.

I recently cancelled both of those and opened the British Airways Premium Plus Amex Credit Card.

The salary bands required are all listed on their website.

I have no idea, I would say the values listed on the UK website are low and for most of us with mortgages or rent to pay you will need to have greater income than that.

I always felt I may have ducked under their radar a bit, latterly they told me that my Platinum credit limit tracked my salary as it increased, nice to know I could have bought a supercar with that card alone.

^^ there, 20K salary required for a bog standard credit card offering cashback. Win.

You won't be able to apply for a Centurion though ... they're invitation only and really rather exclusive.

EDIT: You'll need to spend about ~£200+ each month for the cashback earn rate to balance out the annual fee.

The Charge cards are interesting. You can buy ANYTHING - there's no spend limit at all, but you need to clear the balance every month. Some people could get themselves into some serious trouble with one of those
