hi, i have posted in insurance board too but didnt know where was best to post this. heres link to other post :https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4330451
hopefully someone can help me with what is best to do.

basically my insurance company have cancelled my insurance, they have admitted that it is THEIR fault but are refusing to re instate my insurance and can apparently only give me a new 12 month policy or refund the 2 months that is left which neither of these are good for me as i just want my insurance that i have paid for that ends 20th january. Also they didnt seem to care that i have been driving round for 3 weeks with no insutrance because when i got the letter telling me it was going to be cancelled there advisor on the phone ASSURED ME that it would not be cancelled and then it WAS :(

The insurance company is BISL through CIS eco insurance.

Now im going to have to borrow money to pay the deposit on a new policy because i hadnt expected to pay this until after new year and im skint :(

Did you call them or write to them?

I find that a letter written to a senior person in a company (you should be able to find out details on line) will go a long way.

I make my letters firm, and tell them what I expect them to do to remedy the situation.

If you phone, you'll just get a call handler who'll only be able to do a certain amount, and will follow 'procedure'

If they have admitted it was their mistake then start the complaints process off pronto and be prepared to take it all the way to the FSA if they are difficuklt over this. Have you got it in writing that it was their mistake?

no havent got anything in writing as this has all happened today :( Im going to find a new insurance policy sharpish as im not willing to accept another 12 month policy with these. The woman on the phone said it was there fault ( i have her name wrote down and date and time of call).
Am i best to write to them and complain as i think its disgusting how they can treat people like this. The only thing i want out of this is a letter confirming that it is there fault this has happened then it wont impact on my future insurance and i have proof if it does, or would i be best ringing and asking for this? And proof of my no claims although i think i can still use my old policy from year before as i doubt that im going to get the yrs NCD for this yr now.

The problem with taking out another policy before this is resolved is that you have to answer Yes to the question Have you ever had a policy cancelled, because that is currently what has happened. Once your insurer resolves the issue you can answer No, you would be better to insist that they reinstate your policy until the original end date, then get another one elsewhere.

Thanks, really worried I have dug myself into a deeper hole now. Have taken out a new policy elsewhere as my partner was out in the car at work as it all came to light :( so needed something sorting out soon. The insurance would not budge at all, it was refund or new policy and I just can't trust them now. I will ring new insurance tomorrow and explain what has happened, also going to ring CIS and ask for it in writing that it is their error. I will take this to the ombudsman if they won't sort it as I don't think it is fair to be put in this position due to their negligence!

If this "CIS" means Co-Op...I had problems with them when they without warning cancelled my insurance in 2009, I only found out 9 months later when I came to renew. I had been driving uninsured for 9 months. And I had renewed my tax 7 months later using their cancelled certificate.

I finally got a full refund from them plus a £30 ex-gratia payment. I did not get the insurance re-instated, I did not get a years no claims for that year.

I did not really ask or push for the insurance to be re-instated, as I figured ...I hadn't had any accidents and not stopped by police...so if it was re-instated I would have had to pay for the years insurance, that it turned out, I did not need.....I'd rather have the refund of premium paid.

I did not push for a full no claim for that year, as I had not had insurnce re-instated and I already had 13 years no claims which is more than enough.....

TBH im not too fussed now about having it re-instated as my partners grandad has paid for the deposit of the new insurance for me and i'll pay him back when i get the refund/next fri when i get paid which ever is sooner. All i want is an official letter from them stating that it was cancelled due to their error incase i run into trouble with future insurers. i suppose i can use last years renewal for my NCB now and i've already got 5 years so losing this yrs wont make much harm. And yes it is the co-operative. Have you run into any trouble due to the cancellation? most ask if you have had it cancelled previosly?

Best to write to them. They can't fob you off so easily.

Address it to the Head of Customer Relations (try and find out their name, so you can address it to them personally). Or go straight for the top and address it to Barry Tootell, the acting Chief Executive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Co-operative_Insurance)

Saves being given the run around.
