Insurance cancelled, what can i do?

Options
This is the story in a nutshell.
* October DD was returned for insufficient funds, Rang on 2nd Nov and paid it when they hadn't automatically taken it again. At same time i paid nov installment which was my last payment and the £20 fine for late payment.

*11th nov i get a letter saying that my insurance is going to be cancelled on 18th nov as i havent paid. I ring them guy says that i need an active DD on file (had cancelled it because all paid off), set this up, was assured that my insurance would not be cancelled.

*FF to today i get a letter saying i still havnt sent my certificate back for ins that WAS cancelled on the 18th.

Have rang them up, they have admitted that its there fault but will not re instate my policy as its company policy aparently that they cant once its cancelled. Didnt seem to care that i have been driving round for 3 weeks with no insurance. They offered me a new 12 month policy to start now or the refund of money for the last bit of my policy which i just dont think is good enough and besides i dont want another 12 months with this awful company! So now im left trying to find a new policy today, guna have to borrow money to pay the deposit.

What can i do as i just dont think its fair that they have openly admitted that its their fault and now im left with either the option of another 12 months with them or finding it elsewhere just before xmas when im skint :(

Use the refund as your deposit for a new policy elsewhere?

But i need a new policy today, the car is parked on a public car park miles away because my partner has taken it to work. The refund could take ages to come through because i only got a letter today saying it HAD been cancelled on the 18th nov.

They didnt even seem to care that we have been using the car for 3 weeks thinking we were insured not to mention the fact that i could have got a conviction for it

You could only be convicted 14 days after the service of a cancellation notice.

Will i now have to declare that i have had insurance cancelled in future? They say i dont as its their fault but obviously i cant believe them as they told me that it wouldnt be cancelled and it was.

Your priority is to get the car insured so you may have to go with them for 12 months.

Your partner could get 6 points on his way home.

The car will be insured in about an hour, just gotta go put the money in the bank so i can pay for the new policy that i've found elsewhere. I just think its disgusting how they can do this to people and not have a care about it. i will be writing a complaint to them over this.

so it is going to impact on my new policy then? the woman said i wouldnt have to declare it as its their fault. Just something else they have lied about. I will ring my new insurance company tomorrow and let them know what has happened. I cant believe that the actions of an insurance company can have such an effect on me when its not even my fault.
