Room Thermostats

Anyone got any recommendations on room thermostats ?

As part of my Ecodan install I had a Siemens RDH10-GB fitted, but im finding its a bit temperamental. The ambient temp it shows is always 1-1.5 degc under what I get checking with other digital thermometers, but the most annoying point is it loses connection to the base unit in some parts of the house or if the heat pump is powered off and on. It has to be manually reconnected once it has lost comms to the base unit - i.e. if we get a 5 minute power cut when the house is empty the heating will be off until someone manually resets it....

  • Why are you even moving it around ? A room stat is designed to be fixed to the wall (normally in the hall) & the rest of the house controlled with trv's on the rads or individual controls if you have underfloor heating, a room stat controls the whole of the heating system not just the room you are in, do you take it with you when you go to the loo or to make a cup of tea & then decide it's too hot in those rooms & turn it down while the people in the lounge are getting cold, fix it to the wall & stop walking around with it.
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

We have the same problem with the portable bit as well...it has to be manually overode and it's becoming tiresome.

It comes with a stand, therefore it is not meant to be fixed to the wall. The MAIN receptor part of it IS fixed to the wall. Because it's mobile you can turn the heating on from bed before you get up if you want to without having it set at the boiler to come on every morning regardless.

    Don't be so nasty.

That was the polite version, I know they come with a stand & also a wall bracket, room stats should be fixed in a room without a trv on the rad, you shouldn't have two controls trying to work against each other which if your heating system has the correct controls then that's what you are doing, so please don't come on here moaning about your stat losing connection when you aren't using it as it was designed, room stats control the whole of the heating, trv's control individual rooms (rads).

MY unit is kept in the dining room, 10 feet from the boiler in the kitchen where the receptor is attatched to the wall, the radiator in there and kitchen don't have trvs on them

. It has been moved TWO TIMES in 6 months to a different room. NEITHER TIME has it lost signal, it loses signal when it's sat 10 feet from the receptor.

Like I said before, don't be so nasty.
  • At no point was I saying that I wanted to do the fandango around the house with the thermostat. I was looking for the best point in the house to permanently site the unit and yes I know it needs to be at a neutral point where there is no TRV; In certain positions it works for a while and then loses connectivity and requires a manual reset.

Also like I said the temp reading it gives is wrong and if the unit or heatpump is powered down it loses connectivity wherever it is situated (even right next to the base unit) and again requires a manual reset...Is it faulty or just not a very good thermostat ?

    Helpful comments only please.

I'm not being nasty I'm telling you how it should be used, just because you don't like my answer because it's not how you use yours, doesn't make it nasty

Wireless room stats work on radio waves & lots of things can interfere with them ( I've got one customer that uses the wireless plug in sockets for side lights & when someone parks outside his house & uses the keyfob to lock their car his lights go on or off), so you need to find a place where the signal is good ie not too many walls away from large electrical items, use good batts not rechargeable ones they don't have enough power, on some you can change the frequency to prevent interference from remote controls or next door having the same stat

  • No room stat will be that accurate some are as much as 6 deg out

Good rechargeable AA and AAA batteries store more power than non rechargeable ones. They also give a more constant current. Use only so called Low Self Discharge cells, the ordinary ones are rubbish as they lose ~0.5% a day of the stored charge. Sony Eneloop and Panasonic Infinium are two good makes.
