OH GOD! I'm going to be so grey after this. Someone has bought the flaming phone locked and paid for it, and is NOW saying oops, he's noticed it's locked and can it be used in the flaming Phillipines. Sorry to be a pain with this. Does anyone know if it can?
Lucy
It will work in the phillipines when the phone is unlocked, if the buyer has bought it on the understanding that it is locked then you will have to tell them to pay extra for it to be unlocked as you cant guarantee it will work otherwise.0 -
Thanks for the help. I had a few bidders too, so if he decides he doesn't want it now it's a real pain - I wouln't feel happy making him have it as it's costing £365 plus £70 fed ex to the Philippines, it's a lot of dosh to feel he's wasted. But it did say locked on the listing. My husband says tough luck to him, I think it's been so traumatic he just wants to get the bloomin thing posted and out of site! It's such a lot of money, init.
Thanks everyone for your help. James-73, if he did want to contact you directly instead to get it unlocked, would that be possible? I'm just wondering what'd be the best way, I'm trying to stay out of the whole unlocking it for him thing as I have a feeling things could get even worse if I try messing about with it, lol!

Has the buyer already paid for the phone ? just reading what you have said about posting to the Philippines by fedex started alarm bells ringing, as there are a lot of people who buy mobile phones from abroad and have sent false payments by western union money transfer and paypal, they look genuine payments but the emails are fake.0 -
It did seem dodgy at first - he sent a lot of emails asking if he could pay and was the phone still available, etc (rather than looking again on Ebay), plus he's only got 2 lots of feedback but reg since Feb 2005. He's in the USA, it's for his nephew.
The money's gone into my Paypal account, I went in directly through Ebay rather the using the link from his email. Still a bit suspicious but I guess as the money's in, it should be ok?

I would advise you to give paypal a call, I've heard about this thing happening lots of times before where they say its for a nephew or cousin in another country, jsut to be on the safe side, as one thing that has happened to somebody I know is that a stolen card was used to pay for the goods paypal took the money back and he had by then sent the phone so he lsot the money and the phone. After all the problems you have had regarding unlocking etc I would hate to see this happen to you.0 -

Lucy I'm not happy about what you have said in your posts here about this transaction so I'll get Soolin, the Board Guide from Ebay to have a look and see what she thinks as it all sounds a bit sus to me.0 -
Thanks edinburghlass, I was going to get it checked myself as I didnt wasnt Lucy to fall foul of a scam.0

hi,
i would not send that value phone to anywhere abroad (just from experience) and paypal is far from safe.
a chargeback can be made up to three months after the payment has been received.
i personally would not risk it and when you re-list it say on the auction that you will only ship to the UK and if paying by paypal it must be from a confirmed account.

This whole thing sounds very dodgy, but you have a bigger problem. There is no way of sending a phone worth more than £34 overseas where you are insured, so most people refuse to sell mobiles outside the UK. Royal mail specifically exclude mobiles from their insurance regardless of the postal method used if they are worth more than £34 and go outside the UK.
Going back to the question is the money safe, no it isn't. From the little already said on this thread I would have suspicions about a hijacked ebay account which will mean the money will just be clawed back at any point up to 180 days anyway. This buyer, on the info posted here, does not inspire me with confidence.
Personally unless you are confident that all is well, and are prepared to send a phone uninsured (which itself is a risk paypal wise) I would suggest that you refuse to sell. If it is a scammer they won't press you anyway and will look for another victim, and if the buyer should be genuine realistically all that can happen is that they can leave you negative feedback, and that has to be better than losing all that money.
For future reference, set your seller preferences to exclude bidders from countries to which you do not ship, and then only sell mobiles within the UK.

Crikey, thanks for your replies. I have set the money to transfer straight into my bank account from Paypal thinking that might protect me somehow, but I guess not. I'll let Paypal know so they can look into it tomorrow for me.
He did ask me to send it Fed Ex and said he wanted me to mark it as worth $100 and in used condition so that his nephew wouldn't have to pay tax on it. Fed Ex seemed happy to insure the mobile for £500, but obviously him wanting me to mark it as worth $100 would have compromised any compensation if it had gotten lost or broken. I'm tired out (newborn baby and toddler causing chaos!) so I can't quite think out what benefit this would have to him is he is a fraudster, but it does seem dodgy nonetheless..
It's a contract phone within it's 14 day cooling off period - we were going to sell it and put the SIM into a cheaper phone (it's for my husband's new business he is starting and we're pretty skint), but I don't think I have any energy left to relist it, it's been so traumatic, the whole thing!!! So I'll be posting it back to Vodaphone instead tomorrow I think............
Thanks again everyone for your concern - I can't tell you how grateful I am , as we really can;t afford to make £435 !!!! ups at the mo!!!
