Broadband or Sim for ipad?

Hi, not sure this is the right place but my elderly parents want to try an ipad, they have no computer knowledge but feel they are missing out, they dont have any form of internet connection and their landline is with BT. Do you think its worth them getting broadband or would they be better getting a 3g model ipad and using a sim card? Do you have to have monthly contract sims or is there such a thing as PAYG on the ipad? Just really want the cheapest option for them, it wont be used a great deal but would be nice for them to be able to use it when they wanted to. any ideas welcomed!!!!

the cost of a tablet plus minimum term BB , is not going to be cheap just to try something out.0

You can get a PAYG data only sim for the iPad. But it may be cheaper to get a wifi only iPad plus mifi device (mobile wifi). I have just posted about a good deal on the O2 pocket hotspot, which is a mifi device.
There are also some no-contract home broadband options such as Plusnet & Tesco. Make sure to get cashback if you sign up to one of these...
Mobile broadband and mifi won't be very fast so if they are watching video clips, etc it ay not be very smooth. But for general web browsing it should be OK.
It all depends on how they may use it, which is difficult to know if they haven't had one before!0
