Could I just point out that after the war it was the Labour party who were in power and frittered away billions borrowed from the US on trying to retain the Empire.
Churchill didn't get back into power again until 1951 and he was all for Europe. In a speech in Switzerland in 1946 he was all for building a "United States of Europe".
Chucrhill like all perverts were necessarily always commited to play the long game.

Sorry I disagree....Churchill tried to hold on to India and Labour were left with picking up the pieces after the war. Those billions you refer to were spent building the welfare state for the returning troops, a policy that Churchill had to swallow when he returned to power in 1951. At that point he tried arrogantly to govern the country from his bed while DeGaulle and Adenauer ran rings around him in Europe. Churchill had called for a United States of Europe but he didn't follow through and allowed the aforementioned to set the agenda. We see it time and time again0 -

The one when Churchill claimed that Attlee would run a Gestapo estate. I doubt if we need lectures on "dire tactics" from Tories.
(see also 64 election campaign in Smethick).
Churchill was the greatest of wartime leaders, but a failure as Chancellor of the Exchequer (by his own admission, the return to the gold standard in 1925 was an unmitigated disaster) and a hopeless peacetime postwar PM and shadow (other than building houses).
I tend to agree on his peacetime role but then you go and spoil a decent debate by insults.
I am not a Tory I have a deep distrust of all professional politicians. I am that thing that politicians hate, a floating voter."The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

The point is the results achieved. Germany spent the money received under the Marshall plan on rebuilding industry and infrastructure.
The UK received a lot more than Germany and gave a very low priority to updating industry/infrastructure.
Germany put the foundations in place for a what is now decent welfare system although the rules are somewhat tighter than the UKs and they were and although dragging somewhat recently, still are the powerhouse of Europe.
Various UK governments have done similar with North Sea Oil revenues."The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

The 1945 defeat was more down to war weariness and rumours that he wanted to go to war with the Soviet Union. Something that would have been impossible as the USA had no further desire for war.
He was re-elected in 1951, that in spite of pretty dire tactics by the Labour party.
I think it probably would have been cheaper to hold on to the Empire 'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -
